Thus, the sacred teachings are protected. These are also as stated in the "Garland of Pearls": Alas, all the tantras are so supremely wondrous that all their meanings must be explained in detail. The order of the tantras is as follows: The two great root tantras explain that the essence of all dharmas is one. The two explanatory tantras, mother and son, explain it in the manner of spreading leaves. The two branch tantras explain it like the rising of planets and stars in the ocean. The two tantras that clarify scripture and reasoning explain it in the manner of opening flowers. The four classes of instruction tantras explain it in the manner of ripening fruit. The three tantras of self-abiding intent explain it in the manner of seeing eyes. The two tantras of entering self-liberation explain it in the manner of the heart, the basis of memory. The tantra of the conduct of the wise explains it like a dog that guards the house. So it is. The reason for establishing these as eight categories is that if there are no two root tantras, it is like a tree whose roots are rotten, making it impossible for branches to grow. If there are no two explanatory tantras, mother and son, it is like having no leaves, making it impossible for flowers to bloom. If there are no two branch tantras, it is like a cripple without limbs climbing a rock, only to fall. If there are no two tantras of entering self-liberation, it is like a corpse without a heart, unable to benefit others. If there are no two tantras that clarify scripture and reasoning, it is like having no flowers, making it impossible for fruit to ripen in time. If there are no four classes of instruction tantras, it is like having no fruit, making farming meaningless. If there are no three tantras of self-abiding intent, it is like a blind person who does not know the way, unable to enter the city. If there is no tantra of the conduct of the wise, it is like having no dog to guard the house, allowing enemies and thieves to steal the property. Thus, if these eight are lacking, the conditions for a single teaching are incomplete, but if they are present, they are complete, so it is reasonable and definite to establish them as eight, and more than that is unnecessary. The names and meanings of the eight categories, beginning with the root tantra, are as follows: Root refers to the root that is planted, so it is intended to refer to the root wisdom. Explanation refers to spreading leaves, so it is intended to refer to the mixing of words and meanings. Branch refers to the entwined trunk, so it is intended to refer to the non-duality of the realm of reality and wisdom. Scripture and reasoning refer to bright flowers, so it explains
