May all be happy and peaceful! May we practice Dharma day and night! May the two benefits of self and others be spontaneously accomplished! Thus, it should be said. The third, regarding the explanation of the sound and meaning of the basis of origination—letters, is divided into two parts: first, the general explanation of the nature of letters as clouds; second, the specific explanation of their definite locations. The first part has four points: the letters of location and meaning, the letters of the body's location and channels, the letters of speech and sound, and the letters of ultimate fruition. The first is: the nature of mind, naturally luminous, self-born wisdom, is the essence beyond permanence and annihilation, coming and going, which is called the letter of the sphere, ultimate meaning, and Dharmata. As it says in the Secret Essence of Illusion: The nature of mind is the nature of letters, letters are like wish-fulfilling jewel clouds. The second is: In the center of the four chakras of the body, there are single 'ro' and the three trembling 'ku' existing like pillars. Among them, Ā (ཨཱ,梵文天城体:आ,梵文罗马拟音:ā,汉语字面意思:阿), Āḥ (ཨཱཿ,梵文天城体:आः,梵文罗马拟音:āḥ,汉语字面意思:阿), Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) are the three self-born letters, residing in the three colors of white, red, and blue, serving as the support for the outer body, speech, and mind; the inner afflictions, the three poisons; and the secret Buddha body, speech, and mind, possessing the radiance of the five lights. On the petals of the four chakras, there are the letters of father and mother, method and wisdom, the sixteen vowels and the thirty-four consonants. Through single, doubled, attached, and branched forms, there are eighty-four thousand in total, which serve as the support for the outer aggregates, elements, and sense bases of the body, causing speech and expression to arise. Inwardly, they serve as the support for the eighty-four thousand afflictions and conceptual thoughts, being the support for the arising of numerous conceptual thoughts day and night. Secretly, they are the support for the arising of so many Dharma gates at the time of purification. Furthermore, each consonant is closely associated with the sound of the sixteen vowels, so the form of the letter is also superimposed with the sound it produces. For example, 'ཀ་ཀཱ་' is called 'ཨ་ཨཱ་' because it contains the life 'A'. As it says in the 'Statement of Names': 'A is the most supreme of all letters, arising from within, without origination.' ཀི་ཀཱི་ is ཨི་ཨཱི། ཀུ་ཀཱུ་ is ཨུ་ཨཱུ། ཀེ་ཀཻ་ is ཨེ་ཨཻ། ཀོ་ཀཽ་ is ཨོ་ཨཽ། ཀྲ་ཀྲ་ is ར་རའོ། །རི་རཱི་ and ལི་ལཱི་ are summarized as ཀི་ཀཱི་ because they have the life 'A'. ཨཾ་ཨཿ are called ཀཾ་ཀཿ.

Those root letters, double stacked letters like ཀྐ are called large. གྷ་ཛྷ་དྷ་བྷ་ and the like are called thick. Triple and quintuple stacks, etc., are called letters of the same essence. Similar ones are read together, and dissimilar ones are read separately. They exist in the roots (channels) in that way, in the different essences of body, speech, mind, and the five wisdoms, etc. The letters are also the same as these, merely drawings with the appearance of five lights. In the center of the clear white and red essences and wind, they exist as self-luminous. Now, those whose root letters are clear are those with clear memory and great wisdom; those whose sense faculties are clear but not clear are the opposite of that. In youth, the root letters are clear, so the mind is sharp and the sense faculties are clear; in old age, the root letters become unclear, so there is decline. The third is the letters of sound, which are the expressions of speech. The cause is that the root letters are moved by the wind, and the condition is that they arise from the actions of the tongue and palate. Among these, those that arise from the throat are like ཨ་ (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Meaning), those that arise from the throat are like ཀ་, etc., those that arise from the tip of the tongue are ཏ་ཐ་, etc., those that arise from the tip of the tongue and the palate touching are said to arise from the crown of the head, like ར་ལ་, etc., those that arise from the tongue and palate strongly joined are ཊ་ཋ་, etc., those that arise from the lips are པ་ཕ་བ་བྷ་མ་, etc. Whichever of these sounds is uttered, it arises in dependence on those places. The fourth is the letters of ultimate fruition, which are the Buddha's speech appearing as the sixty branches of sound, and the letters purified in the channel places of the enjoyment body, from which letters emanate and appear in the sky as the sphere of dharma, and from which letters emanate and transform into Buddha bodies, etc., benefiting sentient beings, and the root letters of the enjoyment body and emanation body, adorned with the appearance of the five wisdoms. Relying on this existence, at the time of attaining Buddhahood, countless sutras and tantras appear to beings, and emanations benefit sentient beings. Second, there are five ways to explain the definite places in detail: briefly explaining the root letters, extensively explaining the additional explanations of the branches, determining the way to explain samsara and nirvana, explaining the places and enjoyments, and explaining the ways to express those.
