From the Tantra of Sun and Moon Union: "Identify the name with the meaning of the root. Show the conclusion with the meaning of yoga. Abide in one's own place with the meaning of necessity. Bestow the sequence itself with the meaning of words. Satisfy the minds with the meaning of history." The faults of not explaining in this way are: It says in that very text, "If not explained with the meaning of history, for this great secret teaching, the fault of disbelief will occur. If not explained with the meaning of the root, the dharmas will not gather into wisdom, the fault of limitlessness will occur. If not explained with the meaning of yoga, the distinctions of the vehicles will not be distinguished, the order of great and small will become meaningless. If not explained with the meaning of necessity, for the Great Perfection without effort, the fault of meaninglessness will occur. If not explained with the meaning of words, the clearly arranged words of the tantras, the fault of unclear syllables will occur." Thus it is. The benefits of explaining well are: It says in that very text, "By abandoning these faults in this way, all qualities will be perfected." Thus it is. The necessity is: In "Wisdom Self-Liberated" it says: "For the sake of protecting one's own doctrine, and for the sake of refuting the doctrines of others, explanation is needed." Thus it is. If explained by extensively ascertaining the categories, there are twenty-three examples of precious jewels, and five bonds of the wish-fulfilling tree, explained in twenty-eight ways. Again, it says in that very text: "With the wisdom like the leap of a tigress, cut off the great earth of meaning and explain. With the mind like a great garuda soaring in the sky, cover the contents of meaning and explain. With the mind like the roar of a lion, overpower the lesser vehicles with power and explain. With the mind like a tortoise crawling slowly, clearly explain the syllables of the letters. With the mind like a crow pecking, distinguish between error and correctness and explain. With the mind like a giant throwing, condense the extensive into meaning and explain. With the mind like an elephant sleeping, fix the view on the object and explain. With the mind like a garuda circling, seek the objects of meaning and explain. With the mind like an eagle swooping down to seize, explain the meaning without doubt. With the mind like a child climbing a cliff, explain what is suitable and unsuitable. With the mind like stringing pearls, combine the instructions into meaning and explain. With the mind like a seasonal thunderous rain, refute the slanders of others and explain. The name of the child."

Like a hailstone-like intellect, it explains by comparing from all aspects. Like a wish-fulfilling tree-like intellect, it explains in a very extensive and grand manner. Like a clear sky sun-like intellect, it explains by pervading everything completely. Like a clear-bottomed moon-like intellect, it explains samsara, nirvana, and transcendence. Like a lion's seated posture-like intellect, it explains in accordance with the meaning of meditation. Like a swan's harmonious gait-like intellect, it explains by combining the essence of the meaning. Like a rainbow in the sky-like intellect, it explains with the adornment of the dharmadhatu. Like a razor sharpening its edge-like intellect, it explains by distinguishing views. Like a mirror mandala-like intellect, it explains with both cause and condition. Like lightning flashing in the sky-like intellect, it explains quickly with each word and meaning. Like an empty sky-like intellect, it explains broadly and without limit. Like a throbbing root-like intellect, it explains by pointing out the object of awareness. Like a rolled-up tree trunk-like intellect, it explains by condensing all dharmas into meaning. Like diverging branches-like intellect, It explains by planting with the meaning of instructions. Like flourishing leaves-like intellect, it explains like twenty-one. Like a clear flower-like intellect, it explains like two lamps. Like a ripening fruit-like intellect, it explains that the fruit does not revert to the cause. Like these kinds of explanation methods, one should understand them in order. Thus, at the time of explaining and listening, contemplate the explainer as the teacher Samantabhadra, or Vajradhara, or Vajrasattva, and through the rays of dharma spreading throughout the sky, may all beings as numerous as the dust of fields hear, awaken from the sleep of ignorance, find the meaning of wisdom, abide on the path of liberation, and contemplate understanding the meaning of words. Knowing the listeners as manifestations of noble bodhisattvas, bodhisattva mothers, and dakinis, focus on the union of the supreme clarity of mind, and for myself and limitless sentient beings, who are primordially Buddhas, in the nature of knowing that we are Buddhas, generate the supreme bodhicitta. Thus it is said, in the pure land of Akanishta below, the wheel of dharma of the fivefold perfect mandala, which appears but has no inherent nature, arises, and the dedication for the sake of sentient beings and the teachings enduring long. May the Buddha's teachings flourish and spread! All sentient
