Furthermore, the mind changes according to whether awareness is present or not, while awareness does not change according to whether the mind is present or not. In terms of essence, awareness is not controlled by the mind; in terms of function, the mind is controlled by awareness. If awareness does not move, the thoughts of the mind will not arise, just as if water does not move, waves will not arise. In the "Self-Arisen" it says: "The analogy of mind and awareness is like water and foam, awareness is not controlled by the mind." The path flows from the life-vein, therefore the horse of the mind is because the life-wind flows. The doors are the mouth and nose, because the breath comes out from there. The essence is the nature of samsara, the grasper and the grasped. The function is clinging to objects and clinging to self as real. The action is to create various sufferings and pleasures of samsara. The result is that samsara and the lower realms are without end. As it is said, in the "Self-Arisen" it says: "The reality of the impure place exists in the own continuum of all sentient beings, the impure triple layer exists. That is also the reality of such a place, between the heart and lungs, the triple layer exists. Then it flows from the veins, life arises from the veins, the door arises from the mouth and nose, from which arise eighty thousand, and so on, afflictions, arise in various ways." And in the "Vajrasattva Heart Mirror Tantra" it says: "All sentient beings who are sustained by life mostly have afflictions called ignorance. That also relies on the aggregates of form as the basis, and exists between the heart and lungs. That is not just ignorance alone, but is called mind, adorned with the collection of all habitual tendencies. That also has what is called mind, which exists together with the conceptualization of objects. Those three combined are called ignorance, which is samsara itself. From that arise the five poisons and six emotions. From that arise eighty thousand afflictions. From which path do those arise? In the middle connecting the lungs and heart, there is a life-vein called the red one, which extends upwards in a space like an arrow shaft, that also extends upwards next to the vertebrae. That is also connected to the small left tip. Those ride on the horse of breath. That also flows from the mouth and nose, from which arise various actions and afflictions.

Thus it is said, the earth arises. In the space between the heart and lungs, the wind-horse channel enters from the lungs, and the awareness channel enters from the heart. These two combine. From the mixture of wind and awareness arises the mind, which accumulates habitual patterns, and ignorance, which contemplates objects and relies on mental consciousness. These three, being of one essence but with different aspects, reside on the wind-horse, and from this arises the conceptual thought of grasping, holding, and affliction, which is called samsara. If one realizes this, it is easy to overcome because it is temporary. If one does not realize it, it is difficult to separate because it has been habitual from beginningless time and is very strong. Regarding its temporary nature, the Hevajra Tantra says: "Beings are indeed Buddhas, but they are obscured by temporary stains. If these are removed, they are indeed Buddhas." And the Pramanavarttika says: "The nature of the mind is clear light; stains are temporary." Thus it is said. Conceptual thought is ignorance, therefore it is long-standing and the cause of samsara. The Praise to Manjushri says: "Conceptual thought is great ignorance; it is the cause of falling into the ocean of samsara. By being free from that conceptual thought, you are always in nirvana." Thus it is said. Second, the nature of wisdom is explained in detail. The Talgyur says: "Wisdom is not conceptual thought; its essence is the self-illuminating heart. Its divisions are considered to be three. Its definition is the meaning of being primordially abiding. Because it is known now, it is wisdom." Thus it is said. Therefore, there are four aspects to this: essence, definition, divisions, and individual meanings. First, the essence of wisdom is the individual's own awareness, which has always been present in the expanse of knowledge. As it says in the same text: "Wisdom is said to abide; by realizing its characteristics, it does not abide in either samsara or nirvana." Thus it is said. The definition is to realize and know the meaning of being primordially abiding. The Rangshar says: "Primordially, the self-nature is spontaneously accomplished; from that, realization becomes manifest. The definition of wisdom is just like that." Thus it is said. The divisions are three: the wisdom of the ground, the wisdom of grasping characteristics, and the wisdom that pervades objects. The Mutik Trengwa says: "Wisdom itself is like this: the wisdom of the pure ground, grasping characteristics, and pervading objects." Thus it is said. First, the wisdom of the ground has three aspects. The wisdom of the essence, Kadak (ཀ་དག་, *ka dag*, *ka dag*, Primordial Purity), is like the sky, transcending the extremes of existence and non-existence. The Talgyur says: "The wisdom of the essence, Kadak, does not
