Twenty-one thousand arise from ignorance, and twenty-one thousand arise from equanimity, totaling eighty-four thousand. These eighty-four thousand afflictions, if expanded infinitely, are inconceivable and unimaginable. As it is said in 'Self-Arisen': 'From this, the inconceivable, the unspeakable, the uncountable arise.' These also arise from mind, intellect, memory, habitual tendencies, and doubt, and emerge from all aspects, tainted by the foul odor of afflictions, thus having the function of causing suffering in samsara. As it is said in 'Union of Sun and Moon': 'These and other afflictions are the mind that follows thoughts, the intellect that follows memories, the connecting habitual tendencies, the conceptualization that is the basis of all doubts, and the aspects of grasping objects and things, etc., are immeasurable.' Therefore, all actions and afflictions depend on the mind and mental factors of the three realms. These are the eight aggregates of consciousness. The alaya-consciousness is non-conceptual regarding objects, the non-conceptual pure consciousness that is the cause of the appearance of forms. From this arise the five sense consciousnesses: eye consciousness is grasping form without conceptualization, ear consciousness is grasping sound without conceptualization, nose consciousness is grasping smell without conceptualization, tongue consciousness is grasping taste without conceptualization, body consciousness is grasping touch without conceptualization. From these arise the two consciousnesses of grasper and grasped: the mind-consciousness that first grasps the general, and the afflicted mind that later grasps the particular, namely, the grasper and the grasped. These two mind-consciousnesses have three types: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral, and also have conceptual and non-conceptual aspects as appropriate. The five sense consciousnesses and the alaya-consciousness are non-conceptual. Thus, all fifty-one minds and mental factors of the three realms are only objects to be abandoned and imputed, as it is said in 'Two Truths': 'Mind and mental factors in the three realms, the aspect of imputed distinctions is conceptualization.' These are to be abandoned because they are the nature of ignorance. Here, taking the mind as the path, even the great Mahayana Madhyamaka and other schools that desire Buddhahood, divide mind and mind-essence into two, and condense the nature of the eight, seven, or six aggregates of consciousness into what should be abandoned, mind-

Because realizing that the nature is inherently pure is what should be adopted and abandoned, one begins to practice the path. Here, too, it is somewhat similar, speaking of awareness and the nature of mind arising from awareness, and the mind that grasps its own characteristics. As it says in the "Six Spaces": 'Oh, great Bodhisattva, awareness and the nature of mind arising from awareness are beyond all defilements and discriminations. In short, they are all the causes and results of transcendence of suffering, the realm of those who directly see the self-appearance of awareness. The mind that grasps its own characteristics is all that appears to be labeled in this way, and all that appears to exist, and all that appears not to exist, and all that appears as appearance, sound, view, meditation, and action, and grasping, discrimination, and afflictions, etc. In short, it is all that appears as the object of thought. In short, all the dharmas of samsara are the mind that grasps its own characteristics, the self-appearing appearances of the six classes of beings.' So, are these two the same? There is a great difference, because the common vehicle cannot transcend the mind no matter what one does through view, meditation, and action, but here, awareness unmixed with mind, with the key point of direct perception, is extremely superior, and so on, there are many. Fourth, regarding the individual meanings, there are eight: the support of mind, the place, the path, the door, the essence, the ability, the function, and the result. The support is the upper part of the physical body, the torso. The place is between the heart and the lungs, connected by a tube-like channel as thin as a hair, where the radiance of awareness resides, riding the horse of wind. The wind is like a one-legged blind horse, and the radiance of awareness is like a one-eyed cripple. If these two are not mixed together, thoughts that change in many ways will not arise. The radiance of awareness resides naturally within itself, so even when objects appear, one does not discriminate about them, and clear and lucid wisdom arises. This is the key point of wind, the reason for distinguishing wind and awareness. Because these two are mixed together, thoughts arise from being unclear to being clear. The changing part is wind, and the awareness part is the radiance of awareness. Among them, the essence of awareness within the heart is like water, and from there the radiance of ability goes into the channel, so the mind mixed with wind is like a water bubble, that mind is the ability or radiance of awareness.
