Thus it was said. What is the function of earth causing water to pervade? It is to show the distinctions of beings' actions. Earth causing fire to ripen is to clarify the color of beings' bodies. Earth causing wind to become minute particles is to perfect beings' senses. Earth causing space to open up is to allow beings' minds to abide. Earth causing earth to press down is to show beings' actions and merit. These are called the benefits of the container to the contents. Then again, there is the wind of action that matures from below, its shape and color like a thousand-spoked golden wheel. Possessing the power of self-moving nature, it rises up and stirs all the mandalas of earth and water, just as butter arises from churning milk or yogurt. The essence of the particles turns into gold, and because it is heavy, it sinks to the bottom and settles into the earth. The clear essence rises upward, and the central Mount Meru rises upward to a height of one million six hundred thousand yojanas, and it also penetrates that much into the golden earth below. In total, it is three million two hundred thousand yojanas. Some scriptures also say that it penetrates fourteen thousand yojanas downward. The east of that Mount Meru is made of silver, the south of lapis lazuli, the west of ruby, and the north of gold, so the colors of the sky in those directions also correspond to them. Half of the height that Mount Meru rises from the golden earth, that is, below eighty thousand yojanas, is submerged by water, and below the upper half are four tiers of steps. The lowest is the wind tier, called the lapis lazuli vajra, filled with lapis lazuli vajras. Its width is eighty thousand yojanas, level with the water, and it extends sixteen thousand yojanas outward from Mount Meru, three times as much in the water as in everything else. The height from one tier to the next is ten thousand yojanas. The second tier is: above it is a tier made of water, called the lotus array, which is the nature of crystal, blazing with light, extending eight thousand yojanas outward from Mount Meru. Above it is the third tier, called the wheel array, made of gold, extending four thousand yojanas outward from Mount Meru. Above it is the fourth tier, called the jewel blazing with light, made of coral, with the light of fire.

Now, as the red light shines, it indicates the boundary of whether it will rain or not through the actions of sentient beings. Mount Sumeru rises two thousand yojanas above. Beyond those are seven Playful Seas and seven golden mountains, the seven mountains encircling in a square shape. In order from the inside out, they are: Yoke-Holder Mountain, Plow-Holder Mountain, Sandalwood Mountain, Beautiful-to-See Mountain, Horse-Ear Mountain, Elephant-Nose Mountain, and Axis-Holder Mountain. The heights of these mountains protruding upwards from the water level are: forty thousand yojanas, twenty thousand yojanas, ten thousand yojanas, five thousand yojanas, two thousand five hundred yojanas, one thousand three hundred and fifty yojanas, and six hundred and twenty-five yojanas. In terms of width, each is equal to the height it protrudes from the water. Between these mountains are eight seas encircling, called the Playful Seas because the eight great Naga kings play and frolic in them for an eon. The width of the first Playful Sea is eighty thousand yojanas, and the second and so on are halved each time. The water contains three times the amount. The outer great circle is made of iron, and its height is the same as Yoke-Holder Mountain. Some say it is the same as Axis-Holder Mountain. The width of each of the four directions of the outer ocean is three hundred and twenty-two thousand yojanas. Among the continents, the eastern Continent of Superior Body is crescent-shaped, with the convex side facing outwards, and its length is three hundred and fifty yojanas, while the other three sides are two thousand yojanas. The Body Continent and Superior Body Continent rely on the left and right sides of the main continent, each occupying half. Jambudvipa is located on the southern slope, with three long sides of two thousand yojanas each, and the short side facing outwards, with a length of three-quarters of a yojana. To the right is Chamara Continent, and to the left is another Chamara Continent, each occupying half of the main continent. The western Cow-Possessing Continent is round, with a circumference of seven thousand five hundred yojanas. To the right is Deva Continent, and to the left is Superior Path-Goer Continent, each also occupying half. The northern Kuru Continent is square, with each of the four sides being two thousand yojanas. To the right is Kuru Continent, and to the left is Kuru Continent's companion continent, each occupying half. If one were to describe in detail the abodes of sentient beings in these places, it would be impossible to finish speaking, but if one were to summarize it simply, there are two: the lower realms and the higher realms.
