Since liberation occurs through encounter, do not alter the appearance itself with conceptual mind. By leaving the appearance unexamined, it is liberated into self-purification. There are four aspects of direct liberation, seeing liberation: the meaning of direct liberation, the reason for abiding in direct liberation, the manner of liberation, and examples. The meaning of direct liberation is: liberation into seeing that which is seen merely by directly seeing it, that is, liberation through merely seeing, hearing, or knowing in the first moment. This falls under the category of the manifestation of dharmata. There are three reasons for abiding in direct liberation: reasoning, scripture, and logic. The reasoning is that it is reasonable because there is no object of focus in any grasping or distraction. Appearance is liberated by merely appearing on top of appearance, and knowing is liberated by merely moving on top of movement. Through the key point of emptiness itself, one is liberated by relying on merely thinking that form is form by directly seeing it. Similarly, this applies to sound and so on. How do you know that it is liberated? Because seeing form cuts off the elaboration of what is not form. By abiding in direct seeing, it is liberated in that very place, because the knowing that enters into something else does not arise. The scriptural reason is: In the Guhyagarbha Tantra, it says, "Through the view of great direct liberation, both Buddhas and sentient beings are liberated." The logical reason is that it is reasonable through the logic of being free from extremes and self-purifying. Thus, appearance is direct liberation, because by directly placing it, it is liberated in the place of placement, and it disappears in the place of liberation. The manner of liberation is: by training on a fragment of a phenomenon, the fragment is liberated in the place of direct seeing, not going anywhere, not coming from anywhere, not going anywhere, and not changing from staying anywhere. By training on the whole of a phenomenon, all appearances disappear into direct liberation. The example is like a fair-minded person going to a temple, without any partiality in seeing. Fourth, extreme liberation, the key point of being free from dependence, is that the key point of not clinging to any dependence is: because it is liberated from the extreme of one, it does not abide in two; because it is liberated from two, it does not abide in one either. Similarly, liberation is nominally called the cessation of the four extremes of both and neither. There are three aspects of extreme liberation being free from dependence: the meaning of extreme liberation, the reason for abiding in extreme liberation, and the manner of liberation. The meaning of extreme liberation is: existence and non-existence, appearance and emptiness.
