The first also has three: the nature of the guru who shows, the nature of the disciple who is shown, and the certainty of how to rely on them in common. The first has two aspects: what to adopt and what to abandon. Regarding the advice to rely on a true guru, identifying their characteristics is as follows: In general, they are knowledgeable in all vehicles and have great compassion; they are knowledgeable in the meaning of secret mantras and have complete empowerment; they abide by vows and commitments and have signs of accomplishment in the four branches of recitation and practice. In particular, they have mastery over the meaning of the Great Perfection of inherent nature, and thus have the power to guide others. That is, they have attained the warmth of directly perceiving reality through understanding and expertise in view; they never stray from reality through familiarity and expertise in meditation; they have little grasping and conceptualization, and no acceptance or rejection, through expertise in non-dual conduct; they have one of the three levels of liberation and are free from hope, fear, and effort, making them broad-minded and at ease. As it says in the *Thal Gyur*: \"A guru with complete qualities is like the source of all virtues, holding the basis of perfect enlightenment.\" And as it says in the *Rangshar*: \"A teacher with the meaning of vajra has a good nature and is skilled in teaching, has received empowerment and applies secret mantras to their meaning, knows all outer and inner activities, is inseparable from the deity, is never distracted from samadhi, has the meaning of the Great Perfection instructions, is skilled in the secret tantras of secret mantras, performs all outer and inner activities, does not stray from the meaning of the view, abandons outer and inner secret activities, and enjoys an inexhaustible treasure like a precious jewel of qualities.\" And as it says in the *Vajrasattva Heart Mirror*: \"Broad-minded and skilled in all tantras and doctrines, with a good nature and skilled in the view of realization, the king of secret mantras, Vajra Ali Ka.\" Thus it is. If divided, as it says in the *Rangshar*: \"The teacher also has four meanings: general, guiding, commitment empowerment, and instruction." } ] ============================================================

My Guru! Although four types are mentioned, here they are summarized into two. As stated in the Root Tantra: "Root and branch, two Gurus." And when empowerment, tantra explanation, and oral instruction are given, they are called the Root Guru. Any one or two of these combined are called the Branch Guru. Even if there are two Root Gurus, whichever one's oral instructions one is currently practicing, that one is the most supreme, called the Grounded Guru. The second type, the Guru to be abandoned, is one who does not possess those perfect qualities, whose vows and samayas are broken, who is ignorant but arrogant, who teaches worldly affairs and trivial matters, who binds oneself in place, who causes the disciple's eye of wisdom to close, and who loses the path of liberation. As stated in the Self-Arisen Tantra: "One who is ignorant and greatly arrogant, who is foolish and rash in speech, who does not contemplate the meaning of secret mantra, who cuts off others' minds with arrogant words, who enters the wrong path, who has not seen the face of the empowerment mandala, whose vows have been broken, who cannot answer what is asked, who has little learning and great arrogance, an unexamined Guru is the demon of the disciple, not a Guru who teaches secret mantra, cannot teach Dzogchen Ati, should not associate with such a one." And as stated in the Vajrasattva Heart Mirror: "If the Guru is not a valid measure, like the speech of a monkey, enters the wrong path and practices broken secret mantra, that one is a misleading demon, so should be abandoned." Thus. Secondly, the characteristics of a disciple are two: the common vessel is generally shown, and the special vessel is specifically explained. The first is divided into what to take and what to abandon. The common place of empowerment and key instructions, showing the good vessel. As stated in the Self-Arisen Tantra: "Possesses the power of faith and great diligence, great wisdom and no attachment, possesses respect and practices secret mantra, without conceptual mind and without distraction, possesses vows and is diligent in practice, humble and gentle and compassionate, clear and focused and practices meditation, practices as the Guru says, does not let vows be broken, acts in accordance with others' behavior, with a respectful heart and earnestness, remembers even a single word of instruction, practices one's own benefit in this way, can keep secrets entrusted, does not transgress the meaning of Vajra, relies on a person of great learning."
