It is the Sambhogakaya, the very nature of perfect merit, inseparable in essence from the Dharmakaya. From its aspect, it manifests as a play, clearly revealing the bodies of the five families, thus pervading the entire expanse of space. It is the Sambhogakaya of play, endowed with the five wisdoms that hold characteristics, and is said to be the self-born lord of all the mandalas of the Great Snow Mountain Lake. This has two aspects: the nature of the supporting body and the extensive exposition of the nature of the supported wisdom. Among these, regarding the supporting Sambhogakaya, in terms of its essence, definition, and divisions, the essence is the spontaneously accomplished wisdom body, appearing without inherent existence, endowed with marks and signs. As it says in 'Self-Arisen': 'Colors unmixed, holding their individual characteristics, with marks and signs, beautiful and radiating light, holding the manner of father, mother, and body, is the characteristic of the Sambhogakaya.' So it is said. The definition is from the same tantra: 'Clear and unmixed, pervading all, hence "Sambhogakaya"; the five appearances are without signs, hence "enjoyment"; without object, appearing simultaneously in meaning, hence "perfect"; emptiness unobstructed, each clear, hence "-kaya"; holding the characteristics of each appearance, hence "body."' So it is said. The divisions are in three sets of five. Divided into five perfections, the three kayas abide in fifteen dharmas by the power of various transformations. Among these, in the Dharmakaya state of the Sambhogakaya, the teacher is Vairochana, the Great Snow Mountain Lake. Its manner of abiding is such that when viewed from the outside, the inside is clear; when viewed from the inside, the outside is clear; there is no front or back; the face is open to all ten directions. Its realm has dominion over twenty-one world realms in the palm of its hand. The place is the pure Akaniṣṭha, the retinue is none other than itself, the teaching is the self-arisen wisdom, self-manifest, and the time is the realization manifest. In the Sambhogakaya state of the Sambhogakaya, the teachers are the chief lords of the respective families. Their characteristics are that their essence is different but their nature is the same, the realms are countless mandalas of the respective families, the place is the dense Akaniṣṭha, the retinue is the five families of each, the teaching is the five wisdoms of knowledge, and the time is the appearance, gathering, and expansion. In the Nirmanakaya state of the Sambhogakaya, the teachers are the five chief lords of the respective five Buddha families. Their characteristics are that they appear without inherent existence and are clear without conceptualization. Their realms are gods and goddesses.
