How could it exist? The impermanence and suffering that are spoken of are not inherent in nature itself. Thus it is said. Apart from dependent arising, there are no phenomena that exist. Therefore, apart from emptiness, there are no phenomena that exist. Thus it is said. The assertion of karma as a cause has already been refuted. Killing and stealing are also the same; if one examines whether the object is encountered by dividing it into the three times, or by dividing it into prior and subsequent moments, then the moment of stealing has ceased, and the object cannot be established, which is the same for all things. Therefore, the karma of false appearances is like a dream, and is without inherent existence. The Root Wisdom says: If there is existence from inherent nature, then what would come into being at all? Therefore, for that which harms emptiness, arising does not exist. Thus it is said. As for cessation, because the arising of suffering is obstructed, the cessation of those two, cessation itself, is obstructed. If there is nothing to be obstructed, there is no cessation, just as medicine is not needed when there is no illness. That same text says: If suffering inherently exists, then cessation is not reasonable. Thus it is said. The refutation of the path: When meditating on the path as an antidote to afflictions, does one meditate simultaneously with the afflictions or at different times? If simultaneously, then in one continuum, the abandoned and the antidote are contradictory substances. If at different times, then they cannot function as what is harmed and what harms, like this year's medicine for last year's illness. That path also does not go upward, because the very act of going has been divided into three times and obstructed. It cannot be a path, because whatever is traversed by whatever, the traveler and the path, are obstructed by being simultaneous, different, permanent, and impermanent. The Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior says: For consciousness without a body, encounter is not reasonable. Thus it is said. The Root Wisdom says: When a candle is being lit, it does not encounter darkness. How can a candle dispel darkness as it is being lit? Even if the candle does not encounter it, if it dispels darkness, then the darkness that exists everywhere in the world would be dispelled by the one that exists here. Thus it is said. The path and what is to be abandoned by it are not established because they do not encounter each other in prior and subsequent moments. It is not possible to realize cessation, because cessation itself has been obstructed, so realization is also obstructed. That is to say, if what is to be abandoned has passed, then cessation is not needed; if it has not ceased, then it cannot be obstructed. And if the two are simultaneous, then their essence is contradictory because they are different. If they are not simultaneous, then they cannot function as what is to be abandoned and what abandons, so it is not established.

That's all there is to it. If the very mind that meditates on the stages of the path, etc., is the stages of the path, etc., then the object of meditation and the meditator should not be different entities. If it is something else, then it is impossible for the path to be something other than that mind, and therefore meditation will become meaningless. Therefore, all four noble truths are not established. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: "Non-arising is the one true truth, but children say there are four truths. Seated under the Bodhi tree, not even one truth was established, how much less could there be four?" Also, as it says in the Mother Sutra: "The noble truths, etc., are also without self-nature." Refuting the truly existent creator has two parts: refuting the corporeal and refuting the temporal. First, examine those atoms with five investigations. Regarding aggregation and non-aggregation: If a coarse object is created, do the atoms aggregate or not aggregate with each other? The non-Buddhist Vaisheshika school asserts that they aggregate. The Shravaka Vaibhashika school asserts that they are separated by intervals. The Sautrantika school asserts that they adhere but do not touch. If they aggregate, then when the central atom aggregates with the atoms of the six directions, do they aggregate with a part of the six faces, or do they aggregate with the very face that aggregates with the east, etc.? If they aggregate with the six faces, then the central atom itself will become six parts, because there are six faces that aggregate. If you say that they all adhere to the six directions such as the east, then the atom of the six faces itself will become merely an ornament of the eastern face, because it adheres to the eastern face, just like the atom itself. If you say that they do not adhere, then is the space in between separated by atoms of light and darkness or not separated? It is not possible to be not separated, because the interval of a corporeal object is merely grayish and dark, and does not exceed these. If it is separated, then do they adhere or not adhere to the atoms of light and darkness? If they adhere, then they cannot but adhere with six directions or one direction. If they do not adhere, then there will also be an interval there, therefore, light and darkness either enter or do not enter that interval, there are only these two possibilities. If you say that they never adhere, then an elephant will fit inside a single mustard seed, because the interval is endless. Furthermore, if they do not adhere, then because there is an interval, cutting the body with a sword, destroying a castle with a cannonball, supporting a roof beam with a pillar, and sound coming from a drum, etc., will all become interrupted. Therefore, although it appears that coarse objects are created, they do not actually exist as aggregating or non-aggregating, just like a mountain in a dream. The Twenty Verses says: An aggregation of six parts
