The first aspect has five distinctions: the distinction of reliance as refuge, the distinction of the view of reality, the distinction of familiarization as meditation, the distinction of action as conduct, and the distinction of the fruit to be attained. The first is that taking refuge in the Three Jewels is the insider's way, while not taking refuge in them but relying on Brahma, Vishnu, and others is the outsider's way.

As it is said, "Free from the mind of harming and hurting." The result: Those who directly attain any of the three liberations through that path are internalists, and those who do not attain it are externalists. As the Mother Sutra says, "The Perfection of Wisdom abides closely for the sake of leading all sentient beings to Nirvana. Those who desire to attain Nirvana in the Hearer's ground should also train in the Perfection of Wisdom. Those who desire to attain complete Nirvana in the ground of the Solitary Buddha and the ground of the Unsurpassed Buddha should also train in the Perfection of Wisdom." It also says, "Those other wanderers have neither the path nor the realization of the path." Thus it is proclaimed. Second, the extensive division of the distinguished treatises themselves has two parts. The brief statement: The Victorious One's treatises that follow the sacred path of liberation, Those who uphold them are also of two kinds, The inferior vehicle and the unsurpassed. The Buddhist internalists demonstrate the Buddha and uphold the Three Baskets as their treatises. However, since there is no error in the path to liberation, it is established as the Three Vehicles. For the time being, it is established as the Lesser Vehicle and the Greater Vehicle. Among these, the first is the essential gateway to entering the teachings, and it is the basis for most of the treatises on what to adopt and abandon. Moreover, it is the order of entry for beginners with dull faculties. Therefore, the first distinction, which extensively explains the individual establishments, is the teachings: The inferior also has two kinds of faculties, The Hearers and the Solitary Buddhas. They make their own peace the main goal of their ultimate endeavor. Although they benefit others, they think of it as a virtue for accomplishing their own benefit, so their minds are narrow. They do not accomplish vast deeds and aspirations for the sake of others, so they enter the inferior order of means. As the Precious Garland says: The Hearer's Vehicle, Compared to that, The aspiration of the Bodhisattva and, The dedication of actions are not mentioned, How could it become the Great Vehicle? Thus it is. Their view also does not realize the nature of phenomena, which is empty of all self. Therefore, they know that the extreme of their own view, the self of the person, and the object of grasping, which is merely without inherent existence, are pure liberation, and thus they enter the path of meditation. As the Ornament for Clear Realization says: In order to abandon the concept of the object of grasping, Because the grasper is not abandoned.
