And, relying on the path like a rhinoceros horn, one should know that it is correctly gathered. Thus it is. Even if it is only the lower tenets, because the views and establishments are observed to be slightly different, therefore, here it is said to be two kinds. First, the establishment of the Hearers is: Hearers have division, nature, and tenets, these are only three. There are three establishments of the Hearer Vehicle: the differences of each division, the nature of seeking liberation, and the detailed distinctions of tenets. The first is: The Mahasanghika and Sthavira are distinguished, eighteen divisions, and later others are also divided. That is, three hundred and sixteen years after the Buddha's Nirvana, in the flower-decorated city of Kashmir (Kaśmīra), King Dharma Ashoka, who was called the Righteous King Ashoka, appeared. At that time, the evil demon transformed into a monk, creating a great schism, and the Sangha was in turmoil. At that time, the young Mahasanghika, mostly Sutra holders, were cut off to one side, called the Mahasanghika division. The older few, some Vinaya holders, were cut off to one side, called the Sthavira division. With the difference between the Vinaya spoken by the Buddha and the Sutras mainly acknowledged, the tenets also differed, and the basis of downfalls and precepts also appeared with different numbers. Afterwards, gradually, the Mahasanghika also divided into eight divisions: the divided Mahasanghika, the Ekavyavaharika, the Lokottaravada, the Bahusrutiya, the Prajnaptivada, the Cetiyavada, the Purvasaila, and the Aparasaila. The Sthavira also divided into ten divisions: the Himavanta, the Sarvastivada, the Hetuvada, the Vatsiputriya, the Dharmaguptaka, the Bhadrayaniya, the Sammatīya, the Dharmottariya, the Suvarnabhumi, and the Mahisasaka. Thus, there are eighteen divisions. Later, the Sarvastivada also divided into the Sarvastivada and the Kasyapiya. The Mahisasaka also divided into the Kasyapiya and the Sthavira. The Vatsiputriya also divided into the Dharmottariya and the Samkrantivadin. The Sammatīya, the Dharmaguptaka, and the Bhadrayaniya are also said to have split. The four root divisions are: the Sthavira, the Sarvastivada.

The one revered by many. There are four schools of the Mahasamghika. As stated in the 'Two Examinations': 'The Sthaviras who assert all existence, and the Mahasamghika revered by all.' It is said. There are other ways to establish the eighteen divisions that arose from these through differentiation, which should be understood in the treatise 'The Precious Treasury of Tenets' composed by me. Among these, the Sthaviras are included in the tenet of the Sarvastivadins, while the Mahasamghikas are said to be included in the Sautrantikas. The etymology of each of these schools is as follows: The Sangha that upholds the Sutras, the Mahasamghikas, deviated to one side, hence called the Mahasamghika school. Because it was the first to split from it, it is called the Split Mahasamghika. Because they believe that the Buddha knows all knowable things in a single instant, they are called the Ekavyavaharikas (One-Expression School). Because they say that the Buddha does not possess worldly qualities, they are called the Lokottaravadins (Transcendent-World-Saying School). Because they are taught by a learned teacher, they are called the Bahusrutiyas (Much-Hearing School). When examining compounded phenomena, they say that particles are permanent, hence they are called the Cetiyavadins (Permanent-Saying School). Because they reside on the Chaitya Mountain, they are called the Chaityakas (Stupa School). Because they reside on the eastern mountain of a city adorned with flowers, they are called the Purvasailas (Eastern Mountain Dwellers). Because they reside on the western mountain, they are called the Aparasailas (Western Mountain Dwellers). Because they belong to the Sthavira lineage, they are called the Sthaviras (Elders). The Himavantakas reside on the snowy mountains. Because they assert that the three times and the five aggregates are substantially existent, they are called the Sarvastivadins (Those Who Say Everything Exists). Among the three times, some actions that produce results do not exist, and some actions that do not produce results do exist, hence they are called the Vibhajyavadins (Distinction-Saying School). Because they teach the customs of wearing red robes, they are called the Dharmaguptakas (Red-Robe School). Because they say that all that has occurred and will occur has causes, they are called the Hetuvadins (Cause-Saying School). Although the son of a woman who constantly wanders was ordained with 'Come here,' they acknowledge an inexpressible self, hence they are called the Vatsiputriyas (Calf-Son School). Because they follow the teacher Dharmottara, they are called the Dharmottariyas (Dharma-Supreme School). Because they are students of the Bhadra path, they are called the Bhadrayaniyas (Good-Path School). Because they are revered by all and teach the teacher's customs, they are called the Sammatīyas (Universally Respected School). Because they teach many people that samsara will not arise, they are called the Sannagarikas (Much-Saying School). Because they proclaim the customs of concealing the Dharma, they are called the Dharmapalakas (Dharma-Protected School). Because they shower down excellent Dharma rain, they are called the Suvarsakas (Good-Rain School). Because they follow the teacher Kasyapa, they are called the Kasyapiyas (Kasyapa School). Because they are the teacher's lama, they are called the Lamakas (Lama School).
