And, because of obstructing attainment, and because multiple substances cannot gather together, and because of obstructing abiding, and because of obstructing coming, and if different from form and mind, then it would become impossible to exist in the knowable. In this way, those who believe that sentient beings are truly existent, and those who believe that the Alaya consciousness pervades the body, and those who believe that mind and mental factors are different entities, and those who believe that birth, abiding, and destruction are independent, are refuted. Now, the Sravaka Sautrantika school is explained: The four causes of arising, etc., as practiced by the Sutra school, those seven ways are not the correct view. Here, the Sravaka Sautrantikas believe in seven tenets: the four causes of arising, appearance as mind, objects are hidden, atoms are without gaps, the power of the senses, non-association is imputed, and Nirvana is non-existent. The first is that all arising depends on the four causes, as appropriate: the cause condition, the immediately preceding condition, the objective condition, and the dominant condition. The first is merely being able to benefit the result, that is, generating the essence. The second is like the immediately preceding moment of consciousness ceasing, generating a similar subsequent moment. The third is the object of consciousness. The fourth is merely generating the distinction of the result, that is, not obstructing. Among them, there are five causes: co-existent cause, all-pervasive cause, similar cause, active cause, and simultaneous cause. From the Treasury: The conditions are said to be four. The cause is said to be five causes. Mind and mental factors arise, the immediately preceding is not different, the objective condition is all phenomena, the active cause is said to be dominant. Thus. The way of arising is also that all minds and mental factors arise from the four causes. The cause of eye consciousness itself is that there is a seed of consciousness in the previous consciousness. The immediately preceding condition is the moment immediately after the previous consciousness ceases. The object is form. The dominant condition is the eye sense. Cessation attainment and non-conceptual attainment arise from the three causes other than the objective condition. All other non-associated formations and all forms arise depending on the two, cause and dominant condition, like the cause of a pot is clay, and the dominant condition is the potter. Therefore, the arising and abiding of the mind, and cessation, for form and sound

Etc., are not apparent. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Four are mind and mental factors, three are the two kinds of meditative absorption, the rest arise from these two." Apparent cognition is generally threefold: the object of appearance of knowledge, such as the generation stage of a deity, is a general meaning; like the appearance of two moons, it is the clear appearance of what does not exist; like a vase, it is a self-characterised entity. Thus, all appearances encompassed by these three categories are actual knowledge, being non-different from reality. Obscured objects are general meanings and the clear appearance of what does not exist. They do not exist separately from that, because they appear in conceptual and non-conceptual illusions. All self-characterised entities that appear without illusion are called aspects endowed by meaning. This appearance of a vase is not the vase itself, but the mind. The vase is something that no one can ever actually see; it is non-different from the appearance and understanding of the vase, and exists in obscurity. Similarly, a weapon piercing the body, etc., exists in obscurity. Therefore, the meaning of "knowledge cognizes an object" is not that actual knowledge directly and nakedly cognizes an actual object. Rather, in the second moment after an object arises as a vase, knowledge itself arises in the form of what the vase is like. It is merely labeled that knowledge has grasped the object of knowledge, just as a son who has not grasped his father's face is said to have grasped his father's face when he has arisen in the likeness of his father's face. As it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "How is it grasped when the times are different? If you ask, know that the cause itself, by which knowledge, the knower, can establish the aspect of knowledge, is what is grasped." Therefore, all knowledge has two aspects: self-experience and other-directedness. Only other-directedness is similar to the object. As it says in the Ornament of the Middle Way: "Experiencing oneself clearly is experience; being similar to the object is direction. Therefore, for all knowledge, direction and experience are different." When many particles gather to form a gross object, the particles cannot touch each other, because they would be divided into six parts. Circling is also impossible, because contact with the particles of light and darkness would divide them into six parts. However, they adhere without touching. That is, they adhere because there is no space between them, and they do not touch because the surface parts do not touch. The sense faculty is not a material thing that exists in obscurity, but rather the part of these two bright eyes that can generate consciousness. Therefore, the sense faculty of others
