Those five aggregates are also thoroughly and correctly observed as being empty of inherent nature. Form is emptiness. Emptiness is form. Form is not other than emptiness. Emptiness is not other than form. Likewise, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are empty. And in the Mind Commentary it says: Those who wish to benefit, the five aggregates of form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, were taught to the Hearers. The supreme of two-legged beings (Buddha) always said that form appears like a mass of bubbles, feeling is like a bubble on water, perception is like a mirage, mental formations are like plantain trees, and consciousness is like an illusion. Such a teaching of the aggregates was taught to the Bodhisattvas. Moreover, those who are literalists, looking outward, consider form and so on, like a pillar, to be empty of self-nature. They consider the term 'appearance-emptiness' to be unsuitable, pointing out faults such as seeing emptiness as seeing appearance. Yogis, realizing inwardly, say that form is empty because the object of mind is empty. Even though the appearance of an object appears in the mind, because form has no own-characteristic, that form empties the mind, therefore emptiness is form. The form appearing to the mind and the mind appearing to the form are internal, and the form empty of mind and the object empty of form are external. Because they are like illusions and dreams, they are beyond one and different. Therefore, they consider that form is not other than emptiness, and emptiness is not other than form. Refuting perception: its objects, such as good and bad, large and small, are only relative to each other and are not established in reality. For the same object, some are pleasing and some are not, and so on, because they only engage according to internal habituation. Since that object is not established as either subtle or coarse, the perception that takes that object as its object is also false. Like falsehood, if one examines its own nature, it is also solitary. As the sutra says: To the extent that there is perception, to that extent there is falsehood. There are three refutations of memory: the past object is not established in general, it is an imputation, and it contradicts the object of action. First, remembering a pot, if it is considered to be the appearance of having seen a pot before appearing in the mind, since the pot is not established, it is impossible to remember its appearance. If the mind is a real thing, and the general meaning and the unreal thing are one, then it is too extreme.

Because if there is only one, it contradicts the memory in the mind, and because there is a contradiction in the essence of things and non-things, it is not established. Second, it is not the image of the vase, because it is just clinging to one's own consciousness appearing there. The negation of the memory of the vase is also not established. Third, it is merely the presumption of conceptual thought, and it is impossible to remember that object itself. The past, future, and present objects, with the present consciousness as the object, are themselves not related to the object, so it will also become not remembering the object. The Four Hundred Verses says: "Memory is called the past, and arises in a reversed way in the object." There are nine negations of non-associated formations: general negation, negation of attainment, negation of similarity, negation of the four dharmas, negation of letters, negation of entry, negation of speed, negation of object, and negation of collection. First, non-associated formations cannot be established as entities even in name, because they are neither the same nor different from form and so on. It is not the same, because if impermanence becomes form, it would lead to form becoming impermanent, and if there is no form, it would lead to impermanence not existing. It cannot be different, because the connection with form is not established, and it would lead to the entry not being unique. Other reasons can also be inferred. There are three negations of attainment: agent and object, time, and examining what is to be attained. First, for things like vows, what is to be attained and what can be attained cannot be the same, because one thing cannot be both the agent and the object. Second, when Devas receives the vase, it cannot be said to be in the process of receiving, because if it has already been received, then it should have stopped; if it has not yet been received, then the attainment should not have arisen; if it is in the process of receiving, then the encounter cannot be established, so it is negated. Third, if the vase is a permanent phenomenon, it cannot be taken as what is to be attained, because permanence cannot be established as what is to be attained, and if it can be attained, it will become impermanent. Impermanence cannot be taken as what is to be attained, because it ceases when it is being made into what is to be attained. The Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds says: "Thus, for empty things, what is there to be attained and what is there to be lost?" There are three negations of similarity: mutual dependence, uncertainty of being the same or different, and the thing that makes them the same is not established. First, the vase and the rug are not similar in impermanence, because neither of them has component parts, so it is not established. Second, it is unreasonable for a jewel to be similar to the sun but not similar to darkness, because there is a similar dharma only in things, and if analyzed, the similarity is not established.
