because it would lead to such a fault. It is also not permissible to consider the object as non-divisible consciousness, because the object of cognition itself is non-divisible. If the cognitive faculty itself is non-divisible, then the two would fall into the fault of holding onto two parts, and also because the analysis of contact has already refuted this. It is also not permissible to consider the object as non-consciousness, because the experience of blue, etc., has eliminated this. It is not found inside or outside the body, because the body has not been formed, the basis on which the mind relies has not been formed, and therefore it is not established that it resides there. If the mind were coarse, then the analysis of having parts would be refuted. For the non-divisible, the abode is not established, therefore residing in the body is not established. Moreover, because the body has not been formed, it is also not established that the mind resides in the body. The Commentary on the Bodhicitta states: "Inside or likewise outside, or even in between the two, the Victorious Ones have not found the mind." The Bodhicaryāvatāra states: "The mind is not inside, nor is it outside, nor is it found elsewhere. That which is not the body, not other, not mixed, and does not momentarily abide separately." So, what is the mind as consciousness? Just as the image that appears in a mirror, although it cannot be considered as the mirror itself or as something other than the mirror, yet it appears. Similarly, the mind, although it does not exist, appears, so it is an illusion. The appearances in the mind are even more so with the reason for appearing as illusions. The Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son states: "Like a mirror that is extremely clear, in which there is no inherent nature, the appearance of the image, likewise, know all phenomena through the tree." So, wasn't this sutra spoken from the questioning of the tree deity? There is no contradiction. In the past, when different beings to be tamed listened to the teachings of the Bhagavan, they heard the categories of sutras according to their own inclinations. At the same time, in the same courtyard of the retinue, some heard the Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son, some heard the Sutra of the Question of the Tree, some heard the Sutra of the Immaculate, some heard the Sutra of the Jewel Heap, some heard the Sutra of the King of Samadhi, etc., and each held onto what they had heard and then spoke of it elsewhere, so that is how it happened. Among them, some places and topics are consistent, and some are inconsistent, and the appearances to sentient beings vary, and the times of appearance are earlier or later, these are all the blessings of the Buddha. Clearly being in the same place at the same time, yet appearing in different places and times, this is a miracle. There are four refutations of what arises from the mind: general refutation, individual refutation, perception refutation.

Refutation of Memory. First, there are two: refuting oneness and refuting otherness. First, if mind and mental factors are one, then in terms of convention, it cannot be established as a different substance; like mental factors, mind can also cut off the distinctions of all activities; like mind, mental factors can also analyze the essence; and the numbers are confused with each other, resulting in the fault of becoming six or fifty-one; and it would become the same as the general characteristic. If they are different, then the characteristic is not reasonable; it would become that later inferences have many parts; holding and not holding the general meaning is not reasonable; and it would become the fault of not being mutually inclusive. In separate refutations, there are three: essence, aspect, and name and meaning are not reasonable. First, because mind and oneness or otherness cannot follow, the five all-accompanying factors are not established. Because object and subject, conjunction and non-conjunction, simultaneity and non-simultaneity are not allowed, the five object-determining factors are not established. Because the basis of reliance, goodness itself, is negated, the eleven goodnesses are not established. Because afflictions are not the afflicter or the afflicted, the root afflictions and near afflictions are not established. Because different entities are simultaneous, there is no actual mutual benefit, so the four other transformations and all the previous ones are also negated. Second, if the aspects of each distinction are taken as objects, and there is no other and otherness, then mental factors cannot exist. If these are each established as other and otherness, then the consciousness that completely cuts off all aspects of the object will not be established. Third, the name and meaning are also not reasonable, it is not permissible to say that it arises from the mind. If it arises from being in contact with the mind, then it would become the mind. If it is not in contact, then it should not arise from the mind. Because contact is not established, arising from the mind is not established. Because one entity does not have two functions of producer and produced. Because simultaneous arising of different entities has been prevented. If it arises from non-simultaneity, then simultaneity will be lost. The Ornament of Sutras says: The nature of mind appears as two, appearing as attachment and so on, appearing as faith and so on, afflictions and virtuous dharmas do not exist. The Two Examinations Sutra says: The essence is formless, the seer; there is no sound, nor is there a hearer; there is no smell, nor is there a smeller; there is no taste, nor is there a taster; there is no touch, nor is there a toucher; there is no mind, nor are there mental factors. Therefore, it is said that the selflessness of all phenomena included in the five aggregates is the nature of illusion. The Heart Sutra says: Form
