It is like unspoken words. Severance is not severance, Through cultivation, what is to be severed can also be severed. Even if ripened, it remains. Because the realm is the same, the parts are also the same, All things with different parts, At the time of their connection, Only one arises. Thus it is said. In short, they believe that all that cannot be expressed with different dharmas is pervaded by the same substance. To refute this, like the previous school, Among the seven aspects, the first of the five objects of knowledge to be refuted is the refutation of form, which has nine aspects: definition, arising, sense faculty, object, what is manifested, being obstructive, non-different substance, the ability to produce sound, and the refutation of being non-cognitive. The first point is: For coarse causal form, contact, parts, and directions are excluded. For subtle extension, if hardness and earth are the same, then the parts of the particles have no difference; if they are different, then there will be no hardness. Wetting with water, burning with fire, and shaking with wind are also excluded by examining them in combination. The five sense faculties of resultant form are also unreasonable, because smell and so on have been excluded. If one can see even without contact, it would be too extreme, because the eye would hear sound. If there is a sense faculty of the body that is a different substance from the body, then it is not obstructive, and it would see, and because of the body and touch following, it would not recognize the object, and it would not experience feeling together. If the sense faculty can recognize the object, it would be too extreme, because it would become mind and mental factors. There are three aspects to refuting the object: the refutation of the objects of form, sound, and touch. The first point is: The shape of form is not established, even if it is merely labeled as an aggregation of color particles, it has no parts. There is no small and large, because it is relative, and the cognition of contact is not established. Color also does not exist, because by examining the particles, the parts of color are not established. The second point is: When sound is heard, is it heard from the direction of the west, like seeing a vase, is it heard by the sound existing in the place where the sound arises, or is it like shooting an arrow, is the sound heard by the continuity of the sound moving from east to west? The first is unreasonable, because one hears after a while after beating the drum, so what is heard becomes inverted, and because consciousness is unobstructed, the wind would not obscure it, and the width of the valley would not affect the size of the sound. The second is unreasonable, because continuity and contact have been excluded.

, and because sound cannot arise in the east, and because it is unreasonable for the clarity of hearing to be inconsistent due to the proximity of sound. Pleasantness or unpleasantness cannot be established, because sound disappears in an instant, and there is no permanence to pleasantness or unpleasantness. Smell, taste, and touch also do not exist, because contact has been negated. The existence of something that can be pointed out cannot be established, because neither the part nor the whole can be individually pointed out. A whole without parts cannot be pointed out, and there are no parts without a whole, because partless atoms cannot be established, and coarse matter has parts. Since the part and the whole cannot be established separately, they cannot be pointed out when combined. Furthermore, because the past and future do not exist, and because they are simultaneous with the present, they cannot be pointed out. Obstruction cannot be established. If there is obstruction to something that is not in contact, then an arrow shot from east to west should be obstructed by a mountain. For things that are in contact, if the contact occurs at the same location, there is no obstruction; if the locations are different, then contact cannot be established. There is no substance that is not distinct, because multiplicity is pervaded by distinctness, and non-distinctness does not exist in distinctness. Multiplicity does not exist, because it does not exist in either the subtle or the coarse. Partless atoms cannot be established, and coarse matter with parts is pervaded by multiplicity. The ability to produce sound does not exist, because the atoms that are the cause do not each have the ability, and there is nothing other than those aggregates. Similarly, other forms and so on can be applied analogously. Non-manifest form does not exist, because virtue, non-virtue, and unspecified are excluded, and the continuity and momentary contact of these are negated. There are three negations of mind: it cannot be self-aware or non-self-aware, it cannot be object-aware or non-object-aware, and it cannot be found inside or outside the body. The first case is that mind cannot be self-aware, because the knowable and the knower do not exist as two. Just as the tip of a finger cannot touch itself, and a sword cannot cut itself. The *Lankavatara Sutra* says: Just as a sword cannot cut a sword, and a finger cannot touch itself, similarly, the mind cannot see the mind. Thus it is said. It also cannot be non-self-aware, because happiness and so on are clear through one's own awareness. It also cannot be object-aware, because it is impossible to see what has parts and what does not have parts, and if the object and consciousness are not simultaneous, then what is seen will be inverted, and if they are simultaneous, then because there is no connection, it is not dependent.
