It is because of not wanting it. There is an obstacle: if there is no Mahayana Dharma, then Buddhas cannot arise, because altruistic compassion and so on are not present in the Dharma of the Hearers. It is because the cause of Buddhahood is incomplete. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Incomplete and contradictory, and not showing it as a means, this vehicle of the Hearers is not called the Mahayana Dharma.' So it is said. The similar reasoning is: if the Mahayana is not the Buddha's word, then your four Agamas and the Sutras are also similarly not the Buddha's word. We agree with your Agamas, so it is the same. If we do not agree with your Agamas, then it is not so. If you say that, because a common appearance is not established, if it is not the Buddha's word, then these Agamas do not establish a common appearance with outsiders, so it becomes a fault of not being the Buddha's word. If you say that it is not the Buddha's word because our Hearers have not heard it, that is also unreasonable, because there are Subhuti and others, so it is because they have heard it. If it is because of doubt that it is not the Buddha's word, if you say that, then all the words of the Buddha become the fault of not being the Buddha's word, because demons and heretics doubt it. As it says in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: 'If the Mahayana is not the Buddha's word, then the fault is the same for you.' Refuting the absence of the ten grounds: without having attained the ten grounds, one does not obtain the powers in the stage of an ordinary being, so one cannot perfect even a small amount of accumulation. Therefore, it is reasonable to accumulate in the stages of seeing and cultivating of the noble ones. If one has not abandoned afflictions, then there are many obstacles on the path, so it becomes an obstacle. As it says in the Hidden Dharma Sutra: 'When the lamp-maker, prophesied, at that time, the eighth ground is attained, and the ten powers are also attained.' As it appears. Refuting the self-sufficient Buddha: the Sage himself becomes the fault of not being a Buddha, because he has not abandoned the obscurations of maturation such as brain disease, and because he has not abandoned ignorance by asking about joyful conduct and far-flying, and because the benefit of beings ceases after passing away, because there is no great compassion. By this reasoning, the belief that the Alaya consciousness is completely non-existent, and the belief that Hearers cannot become Buddhas, and that realization is the same as that of the noble ones but there are no qualities of the grounds, and yet the belief that one has attained the Dharma of the noble ones, and that one can discard the skull after death but no other emanations will occur, these are also refuted. Now, the self-

The one who illuminates the sacred teachings is none other than the two aspects of individual nature: the Vaibhashika and the Sautrantika. Among them, the Sautrantika is based on the Buddha's intention for sentient beings with sharp faculties and proximity to Bodhi, teaching through various intentions. Those of common intellect, with shallow wisdom, who only see this shore, cannot comprehend or ascertain it, merely accepting it as a temporary scriptural authority. To understand what its intention is and to ascertain it is the treatise "Great Vaibhasha." Therefore, they say, "It is as it is, accepted as valid." Those who follow it are the Vaibhashikas. Furthermore, treatises are created by individuals, and there may be those who do not impartially measure their own conceptualizations, so they cannot be considered valid. Therefore, the Sutras spoken by the All-Knowing One, whose eyes are unobstructed in all phenomena, are accepted as valid. Those who follow it are called Sautrantikas. Among them, firstly, the Vaibhashikas' understanding of the five aggregates of knowledge, etc., and the meaning of the seven treatises is not accurate. Initially, although there are many tenets of the Vaibhashikas, they assert that the main ones are seven: the five aggregates of knowledge, destruction as a separate entity, the existence of the three times, the inexpressible self, consciousness not knowing itself and its object, the difference between name and meaning, and the non-depleting substance. The first is that all knowable things are determined as the five aggregates: form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. Among them, the nature of the form aggregate is the characteristic of being changeable. If divided, there are the four elemental forms, and the eleven derived forms, totaling fifteen. As the Abhidharmakosha says: "Form is the five senses and the five objects, and the non-revealing form." The four elemental forms are earth, water, fire, and wind. The eleven derived forms are the five sense organs of eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body; the five objects of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch; and the non-revealing form. That is unshowable and unobstructed. Moreover, even in distraction to external objects and in samadhi without mind, there is the discipline of virtuous qualities continuously arising, and the non-discipline of non-virtuous qualities continuously arising, and the intermediate virtuous and non-virtuous qualities are determined to arise continuously. As the Abhidharmakosha says: "In distraction and without mind, whatever virtuous and non-virtuous follows, the great elements are the cause.
