It is said to be slow with forty (aspects). As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Those two again and again, Their own minds are full of arising, For the sake of manifest joy in nirvana, It is considered that realization is slow." Those two refer to the Arhats of Hearers and Solitary Realizers generating the mind of enlightenment. So, did the Arhat of the Hearers realize emptiness or not? Some ancient teachers think that they did not realize the selflessness of persons, and the Solitary Buddha realized that half of the grasped phenomena is without self-nature, so they think that neither of them realized it. Although some argue that they realized it, I think, It should be understood like this: Even when the Hearer schools separated in the past, some thought there was a self, some thought there was no self, and some thought it was like an image. Because they had different ways of practicing the path, So in the time of fruition, they also followed the previous path, so it is understood that there were two cases of realization and non-realization. That is, the Arhats who entered the path of the Vaibhashikas, because they were more accustomed to clinging to things that existed before, only spoke of realizing the selflessness of persons, but did not realize the selflessness of phenomena, because they clung to characteristics. If one practices the path from the aspect of the Sutras, because of the depth of wisdom, it is thought that one realizes things like images. That is, those with sharp faculties, inferring from the aspect of form, realize that all phenomena are the same; while those with dull faculties know nothing other than what is indicated. Because they agree that they only realize selflessness of nature, both must realize that the clinging to the aggregates is empty. As it says in the Precious Garland: "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, Then there is clinging to self in it. If there is clinging to self, then there is karma again, From that karma, rebirth will occur." And, if one realizes one thing as selfless, then one must realize all things as selfless. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: "What is the emptiness of one, That is the emptiness of all. How one looks at one thing, It is said that one looks at all things." That is, knowing that the fault of clinging to self leads to samsara, therefore, whether sharp or dull, they all agree that all phenomena are selfless. But the dull ones do not understand that all phenomena are without basis, but practice emptiness on the nature of phenomena, so they do not realize the selflessness of phenomena, which is expressed with a word of negating inferiority. And the sharp ones merely understand dependent origination.

Although possessing the nature of knowing, they are afraid even of the happiness and suffering in dreams, and therefore incline towards peace. Merely to refute the inferior, some scriptures state that the selflessness of phenomena is not realized. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: 'Those Arhats, seeing that all phenomena arise from causes and conditions, think to be liberated from suffering, but because they have not realized the selflessness of phenomena, they are not liberated from suffering.' And in the Vimalakirti Sutra: 'Even a defiled person who is devoted to emptiness is superior, while the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who are without defilements but have objects of focus are not so.' Please explain, how do their unconditioned realities, which are directly realized, have objects of focus? 'Their unconditioned reality is as tiny as a hair's tip taken from the ocean.' And in the Brahma-visesa-cinta-prasna Sutra, Shariputra said: 'The Shravakas follow after sounds, and the wisdom that liberates them with the limited wisdom of their own continuum, I am called the supreme among those with wisdom.' And in the Kashyapa-parivarta Sutra: 'The emptiness that they realize is as small as the space inside a mustard seed eaten by a worm.' And in the commentary on the Uttaratantra: 'Like clouds obscuring the sky, like the sun shining, here, the wise only see a corner. Even the noble ones with pure eyes of wisdom do not fully see everything.' These are the (relevant quotations). It is not that they have not realized the emptiness of these things as selfless, even realizing coarse particles and so on is selfless, because the mind that grasps at the coarse has disappeared. However, they are daunted by the Buddha's teachings, which are like the sands of the Ganges, and the vast means of the Bodhisattva's conduct, and they are weary of the faults of samsara. In the Mother Sutra, it is also said: 'Even those who wish to attain peace in the Shravaka ground should train in the Prajnaparamita.' When this chapter on inequality and equality was taught, five hundred monks and two hundred nuns were liberated from the outflows without taking anything. How should these meanings be straightened out? Therefore, the wisdom that realizes the mistaken appearance as selfless is only the same in terms of selflessness. But abiding in this mistaken appearance for a long time to benefit sentient beings is extremely great.
