It should be known that the methods of practice of (Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas) differ from wisdom and liberation. Those noble Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas enter from a small portion of the Mahāyāna accumulation path, because the Buddhas of the Mahāyāna need to accomplish the five paths of the Mahāyāna and the connection of following and returning. Noble ones also do not become ordinary beings, because they have previously attained the Arhat state. Nor do they become Mahāyāna noble ones, because they have not attained the abandonment and realization and equal abilities of the path of seeing. Because they are noble Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas who practice the Mahāyāna accumulation and application paths, these two aspects of the sign cannot establish the Mahāyāna noble ones, because there is no pervasiveness. If it were established, then the bodhisattva of the first ground should be a Buddha when manifesting as a Buddha, which is the same as "being a noble one but appearing as a Buddha." For a detailed classification of these, one should refer to my treatise "The Jewel Staircase." Refuting the non-existence of the Ālayavijñāna: The six alternate like the five colors alternate. In terms of convention, it is not permissible for the Ālayavijñāna to not exist, because it is not possible to enter into Saṃsāra, not possible to return from Saṃsāra, and not possible to arise after ceasing. The first point is: if there is no Ālayavijñāna that constantly continues to enter, then it should not be possible to take birth in Saṃsāra, because there is no basis for habits, and in a state of unconsciousness, there are no six consciousnesses such as seeing forms. It is not possible to return from Saṃsāra because on the basis of one entity of consciousness, there are no two, afflictions to be abandoned and the abandoner, because the five sense consciousnesses cease when one is in meditative equipoise on the noble path. It is not possible to arise after ceasing because after fainting and so on, the six consciousnesses arise, so the six consciousnesses do not arise from the previous six consciousnesses, because they have been interrupted for a long time. The body also does not arise, because it is a proximate cause. As it is said in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra: "Consciousness arises from mind, mind arises from Ālayavijñāna, all minds arise from Ālayavijñāna, like waves." And as it is said in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra: "The grasping consciousness is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a stream of water, it is not permissible to grasp as self, this I have not taught to children."

Similarly, the teachings that also originate from the Hearer Vehicle, such as in the Sutra on the Four Benefits of the Tathagata, state: "Beings delight in the ālaya, universally delight in the ālaya, truly arise from the ālaya, and those who manifestly delight in the ālaya will be willing to listen to the Dharma when it is taught for the sake of abandoning the ālaya." It is like that. There are three refutations against the non-existence of the Mahayana: the absence of proof, the presence of harm, and the similarity of reasoning. First, conditioned phenomena are not contradictory to impermanence, because the Sambhogakaya is not a conditioned phenomenon. As the Uttaratantra states: "Unmade and spontaneously accomplished." Some believe that things are impermanent or a momentary continuum, and that permanence is constant, and that conditioned phenomena arise from merit, which is merely not inclining towards the Mahayana. Moreover, for qualities that are of the same essence as the essence of the heart, without before or after, the obscuring stains are removed by the two accumulations, causing the two kayas to manifest. Even if it is hypothetically established as arising from a cause, it will still be separable. As the Ornament of the Sutras states: "Although there is no difference between before and after, that thusness is purified." And so on, it has been clarified. Therefore, if you think it will become truly permanent, that is not the case. Because the Tathagata's wisdom, which is liberated from all things and non-things, is the inconceivable realm of pure vision. As the Uttaratantra states: "The Buddha-dhatu, enlightenment, Buddha-qualities, and Buddha-activities, are not to be thought of even by pure beings." It is not contradictory to selflessness, because the Sugata-garbha is empty of adventitious dharmas, and the ālaya is a momentary continuum. It is not contradictory to suffering, because you also believe that the lessening of suffering is happiness. It is not contradictory to peace, because the Arhat is not ultimate Nirvana, but rather the coarse suffering of samsara is pacified. And we consider it to be the Dharmakaya of the Buddha, and you also do not believe in annihilationist Nirvana. It is also not contradictory to the Vinaya, because for the sake of great necessity, small prohibitions are allowed, and Bodhisattvas do not engage in prohibitions that are defiled by afflictions and ignorance. It is also not contradictory to karma and its effects, because karma will exhaust itself, and so will the Mahayana.
