Six, eight kinds of clinging to the absence of consciousness, eight kinds of clinging to the presence or absence of consciousness, seven belonging to the category of annihilationism, and five who claim to have attained liberation from suffering. Refuting these views: If we collect them, they are the two extremes of permanence and annihilation. Since they lack gross and subtle changes and are meaningless, just as there is no permanence, how can there be annihilation? The three hundred and sixty views are also included in the view of the aggregates of destruction. As it is stated in the Compendium, "Just as sixty-two views are included in the view of the aggregates of destruction." This has already been refuted before. However, since all are included in the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, the refutation is as follows: There is no permanence because all objects and consciousness change, and they cannot withstand examination in either gross or subtle ways, so they cannot be the basis of permanence. There is no annihilation because the things that appear to exist depend on their own causes and conditions, and the things that do not exist, such as space, have not been established as the cause of annihilation, so annihilation is not established. If you say that the self is permanent, it is not valid. Is the self one with or different from the aggregates? If it is one, then just as the aggregates arise and cease, the self will also arise and cease. If it is different, then the self other than the five aggregates cannot be found. Because the gross cannot be established as indivisible particles, and the moment cannot be established as an indivisible subtle nature, therefore the self cannot be established. As it is stated in the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, "If the aggregates were the self, they would be subject to arising and ceasing. But if there is a self other than the aggregates, it would be without the characteristics of the aggregates." It is like that. If someone says that even if the self is not permanent, the continuity of the self is permanent, so the self is permanent, that is also not valid. As it is stated in the Two Truths, "Continuity and moment, like a garland and an army, are false." According to this reasoning, if continuity is a garland of moments, then the three moments of past, future, and present cannot meet, and because there are no parts, it cannot be a moment or continuity, therefore it is refuted. Furthermore, it is not reasonable to say that the self exists because it can pervade sentient beings and perform functions. If it performs functions, does it do so simultaneously or gradually? If it does so simultaneously, there will be faults such as a baby turning into an old person in an instant. If it does so gradually, then because the former has ceased and the latter has not yet arisen, there is no collection, so there is no ability to perform functions. Moreover, the agent and the object are contradictory, so it is also unreasonable. If one clings to annihilation, then the assertion that everything is without cause, etc., is refuted as before. Now, all these

All tenets and treatises are summarized and shown as five Tirthika systems: Those very natures with many names, Samkhya, Vaisheshika, Charvaka, naked ones, Pūrana and so on are these five. If the limitless treatises of outsiders, which are clear through distinctions of names, are summarized, then the former teachers made them into five types: Samkhya, Vaisheshika, Charvaka, naked ones, and Pūrana. Among these, the first four hold the treatises that speak of permanence, while the latter is established as a nihilistic school. Among these, the first, the Samkhya, says that liberation is attained by knowing the self, the chief, and their transformations, but this is false. Since liberation and nature are different, it is contradictory to unite with what is contradictory, and there is never liberation for those who gather, so the Buddhists say. Here, if its divisions are explained in detail, it is only the establishment of tenets and the statement of contradictions. First, its teacher is called Sage Kapila, who obtained common merits through the path of asceticism, appeared during the reign of King Yuel Hu, and lived in the snowy mountains. Its treatises include "Ishvara Krishna," "Sixty Sutras," and "Fifty Characteristics," and so on. In this school, there are also two types: those who consider Ishvara as a god and those who do not. Its tenet is that it considers the knowable things to be twenty-five in number. There are three points to determine these twenty-five things: their respective nature, classification, and how to liberate through knowledge. First, the twenty-five things are: nature, great, ego, eleven powers, five tanmatras, five elements, and purusha. The eleven powers are: ear, eye, nose, tongue, and body, which are the five cognitive powers; mouth, hand, foot, anus, and genitals, which are the five active powers; and mind, which is common to all powers. The five tanmatras are: form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. The five elements are: earth, water, fire, wind, and space. Among these, nature is dust, darkness, and strength, that is, suffering, ignorance, which is intermediate, and happiness.
