It is refuted by the establishment of... Regarding the latter extreme, in general, it is not permissible to consider consciousness as permanent, because it clings to certain objects. There is no form, because the indivisible subtle particle is not established. There is no constant happiness, because it is occasional. Constant suffering is also the same. It is not singular, because the pervasive substances are different. It is not different, because it contradicts time and is not permissible before and after. Large and small are not permissible, because there are no parts. It is impossible to have no consciousness without form, because it is impossible to enjoy both appearance and awareness. The three aggregates that are not both, if the two are contradictory, then the basis is impossible, therefore it is refuted. Refuting the two views of annihilationism and eternalism: there is no permanence, no continuity, and the imputed existence is not refuted. First, if there is a permanent thing, then annihilation is possible, but since things are always of the nature of momentary arising and ceasing, annihilation is not permissible, just as a hundred mustard seeds piled up together, the string will not break. There is no annihilation of continuity, because it is no different from many moments, like a generality. The annihilation of imputed existence is impossible, because of the combination of contradictions. Here, refuting nirvana, there are three: there is no happiness in samsara, temporary happiness is not to be sought, and permanent nirvana is not refuted. First, there can be no happiness in samsara, because it does not go beyond the three sufferings of suffering, change, and conditioned existence. Second, something that is slightly pleasing cannot be permanent and is again the cause of suffering, like engaging in adultery with the king's consort. Third, omniscience is not refuted, because on top of the unrefuted valid cognition, there is establishment. Similarly, one's own school also believes that liberation is attained by taking the arising of happiness as the path, and believes that the nature of mind is only happiness, therefore the establishment of liberation is refuted. The three hundred and sixty views are: those with leaves, etc., are one hundred and twenty. Multiplying by the three times gives three hundred and sixty. Wandering away from the correct path, in permanence and annihilation. The teachers with leaves, etc., are one hundred and twenty. They have appeared before, they exist now, and they will appear later. The sum of the three parts of one hundred and twenty.
