Like a magic trick. Like a city of Gandharvas. Thus it is born, thus it abides. Thus also it is said to perish. Thus it is. Furthermore, as one, the Madhyamikas consider the assertions of others to be fabrications, therefore they refute whatever is asserted. Since they themselves have no vow to establish anything, there is neither denial nor establishment of past and future lives. What appears as being done in debate is merely an illusion, not the truth. As it is said. In the *Refutation of Debate*: How does a magic trick refute a magic trick? This refutation should also be regarded in the same way. Thus it is. Therefore, no matter how it appears, it is not established as such, and thus it is utterly overturned without any basis. In particular, refutation in conventional terms: Even in conventional terms, wood and stone have no mind. Because although they appear to be living beings, they are negated because there is no clear indication. To negate what is not life, there is: general negation of inherent nature, and particular negation in conventional terms. First, since the very basis of dependence, life itself, is not established, the distinguishing characteristic of "not life" is not established. The basis of distinction, sound and so on, is not established even in minute parts, and therefore it is negated in ultimate truth. Second, life and non-life are the same, one's own nature is contradictory, and everything becomes everything. First, if it is asserted that earth and so on have body and mind through touch, then why not assert that sound, smell, light, and so on also have ear consciousness and so on through hearing and so on? If it is thought that these cannot be asserted because there is no connection, then the mere fact that earth and so on have touch would also become unrelated as proof of having body consciousness. Furthermore, since sound and so on cannot be moved and grasped at will, why not assert that these also have mind? Similarly, why not assert that space is also sentient, since it cannot be grasped and conforms to the shape of the container? If it is thought that these are not reasons for having mind, but merely that they arise from their own nature as clear matter, and merely appear as such due to the power of causes and conditions, then the fact that earth and so on have touch, and that water and trees grow from the sound of thunder, and so on, are merely transformed in that way due to the power of causes and conditions, and cannot be proof of having mind. Second, are earth and so on knowledge of their own nature? Or do earth and so on have knowledge? If it is the former, then each particle is a separate knowledge, and

It is unreasonable to consider both ignorance and singularity as valid. If matter and consciousness have a common basis, then sound and other things should also be perceived, and the consciousness of the dead body should not be lost, and past and future lives, etc., cannot be established. Furthermore, since it contradicts one's own views, it should not be accepted. According to the second view, consciousness is not excluded from sound and other things, and it is not contradictory to have a pure body. If it is admitted that consciousness separated from tactile sensation is impossible, then the consciousness of the dead will also be considered touchable. If plucking one's own hair is equivalent to committing the crime of killing, then it will also be considered touchable. If it is thought that because it has no sensation, it has no mind, then it will be proven that land and other things also have no mind. If, in the third view, such an irrelevant sign can prove existence or non-existence, then the candle that eliminates darkness will also become dark, and the darkness that is eliminated will also become light. Because there is no stick, the person with a hand will also be negated, and so on, everything will become everything, so all classifications of knowledge will disappear. Therefore, such an irrelevant sign is not a way to prove things. As stated in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Whatever has attributes, etc., if there is no such connection, then these things may produce errors, therefore it is not a reason." Some things are concordant, but not everything is interconnected. As stated in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Everything is the essence of both, in order to eliminate its difference, when urging to drink yogurt, why run to the cow?" The negation of universals is: it is impossible for something to be inherently singular in the multitude of places, times, and numbers, because it is the same as the universal, and it is unreasonable to divide it into error and non-error. Objects and substances are different, but the essence is the same, which is directly negated, just like a vase and a pillar. In this way, the various external appearances appear unmixed as a singularity in one's own mind, and the belief that everything is in nirvana, and that mountains, rocks, and trees appear, but in reality are considered to be the images of gods and demons, are all negated. We believe that in illusory appearances, things appear as different causes and effects, but in essence, nothing is established. Although samsara and nirvana are different in appearance, they are singular in essence and beyond difference. Mountains, rocks, gods, and demons are objects of attachment, not images.
