It is because of being seized by compassion. The Vajra Holders of the past held that if someone with a devious mind were to realize a higher state through improper means, it would result in a root downfall. Therefore, they said that even the fasting of the Meaning-Snare would be tormented in hell. Refuting vows has three aspects: the object to be refuted is false, the continuity is not established, and it is meaningless. The first is: In general, the vow itself is not established, because the object to be restrained depends on killing, stealing, and lying. Moreover, in one continuum, the object to be restrained and the restrainer are mutually contradictory at the same time, so it is not established. The second is: The continuous accumulation of virtue is not established, because continuity itself is momentary and indivisible, and since it is neither the same as nor different from the substance, contact is not established. From the Accomplishment of Secrets, it is said: "There is no object to be restrained, and there is no restraint. There are no channels, winds, or bindus. It is accomplished through emptiness." The third is: Trees are not sentient beings, because even minute particles do not exist. If one asks: Then, how is it explained that cutting a tree branch leads to rebirth as a Naga? It is because the boundary of the tree was broken and anger was directed towards the Buddha, not because the tree was sentient and was cut. Refuting afflictions has three aspects: the object is false, it is not reasonable to be either one with or different from the mind, and it cannot be found inside or outside the body. The first is: Desire is not established, because it depends on the attractiveness or unattractiveness of the object, and the object does not even exist as a minute particle. Therefore, there is no mind attached to it. The Precious Garland says: "If the seed is false, how can its fruit be true? The aggregates that arise from self-grasping, that self-grasping is ultimately false." The second is: Desire and mind cannot be the same, because if they were the same, then at the time of birth without desire, one should also be born with desire, since it is true that it is the same as desire. Moreover, the two, desire and the one possessing desire, cannot be established at the same time in one continuum. Nor can they be different, because like the desire of another person, it would not harm me. The Root Wisdom says: "If desire and attachment are established as being different, then why are these two simultaneously apprehended?" The third is: When afflictions such as desire are analyzed and broken down in one's own body, they are not seen anywhere inside or outside the body, therefore it does not exist in me.

It is like this. As stated in the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "Afflictions do not reside in objects, nor in the senses, nor in between, nor elsewhere. Where do they reside that harm all beings? This is like an illusion, therefore dispel fear in your heart and cultivate diligence to understand. Why do they pointlessly inflict harm on me in hell and other realms?" "With the eye of wisdom, dispel afflictions, afflictions. Eliminate them from your mind, where will they go? From where will they reside and come to harm me? For me, a person of weak intellect, without diligence, it is finished." So it is said. Refuting bondage has three aspects: the object and agent of bondage should not be one, not different, and not many; the permanent and impermanent should not be samsara; and there is no middle. First, when beings are bound to samsara by karma and afflictions, the object of bondage and the agent of bondage should not be one, because the agent and object are not two, just as the prison itself is not the chain. It should not be different, because contact is prevented, and if there is no contact, the binder cannot harm, like a chain from another continent. Second, when sentient beings wander in samsara, does the permanent wander or the impermanent wander? The permanent does not wander, because it cannot move. The impermanent does not wander, because when it wanders from one place to another, it ceases when it appears, so there is no wanderer. The continuum does not wander, because there is no contact for an instant, so the continuum itself is not established. As stated in the "Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way": "If they are permanent, they do not wander; if they are impermanent, they cannot wander either. The same is true for sentient beings." So it is said. The absence of a middle is: because there is no before or after, the present middle is negated, because there is no end, there cannot be a middle, just as the edge of the moon has no dust particles, so it is not established at the edge, and it is the same in the middle, so it is not established. As stated in that text: "Samsara has no beginning or end, therefore there is no before or after. For that which has no beginning or end, where is the middle?" So it is said. Refuting liberation has three aspects: it is refuted because there is no samsara, it is not liberated at the time of being bound or unbound, and it should not be existent or non-existent. First, because samsara is refuted, liberation is refuted, because liberation without something to grasp is impossible, like a prison. Second, is it liberated at the time of being bound, or at the time of being liberated, or in between the two? There is no liberation at the time of being bound, because they are contradictory phenomena. At the time of liberation
