Then, these (phenomena) will be perpetual, because there is no cause. If there is no cause, even if one strives to cultivate, there will be no fruit of the autumn harvest. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: If indeed something were to arise solely from no cause, then everything would always arise from everything. For the sake of producing fruit, people would not gather seeds and so forth in hundreds of ways. Thus it is said. Third, because it is seen that smoke arises from fire, sprouts arise from seeds, and the sound of a drum arises from striking a stick, the absence of cause is refuted, so there is no need to argue. Fourth, it cannot be said that everything is without cause, because the word "without cause" cannot be uttered without the tongue and palate touching. This is actually refuted by one's own words. Fifth, saying that there is no cause is meaningless, because it cannot cause the other person to understand. The example that is not established is: the cause of the sun rising is the sun itself, and the cause of water flowing downwards is the water itself. Because it is impossible for a part to be both the producer and the produced in one substance. Because, in relation to one cause, the nature of being produced and not being produced is contradictory, so it will become different substances. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: Just as thorns and so on, sharpness and so on have no cause, therefore they will become without cause. If something arises, then what will arise? If something changes, then what will change? That is well shown to be the cause, and they also exist in those things. Thus it is said. Clouds are also water vapor lifted by the wind, and the formation of the world is also from causes such as clouds carried by the wind from other worlds, spreading here and falling as rain and so on. Everything is formed from the common cause of karma. As it is said in the Abhidharmakośa: Karma produces various worlds. If there are unseen things, are there any things without cause? There will be no such thing, because smoke arises from fire, even if it is hidden, there is a cause, but the result is obvious, so all things arise from a cause. Therefore, all the causes and effects at the time of arising are like illusions and dreams, and if analyzed, it will be known that they have no self-nature. Contradictory to one's own tenets is: the king

Therefore, as it is said, "Here, virtuous and non-virtuous, the actions done by oneself, will not be wasted, therefore, like a spear, abandon sins." Through knowledge, refuting the non-recognition of self-nature, there are three situations: the fault of becoming non-knowledge, the fault of not recognizing the object, and the fault of the mind becoming confused. The first situation is that because self-awareness is the nature of knowledge and the state of self-aware knowledge, merely returning from non-recognition of self-nature will become self-awareness. As it is said in the Ornament of the Middle Way, "From the nature of the consciousness aggregate, a great return arises, whatever is not the nature of the aggregate, is here called the knowledge of self." Therefore, if one does not recognize self-nature, it will become the fault of not even being knowledge, because it is separated from the pervasion of knowledge. The second situation is that knowledge will become the fault of never recognizing the object, because of not recognizing self-nature. That is, for a vase to be established by eye consciousness, it is necessary to establish that eye consciousness itself exists. As it is said in the Compendium on Valid Cognition, "If the object is not manifest, then it will not be possible to well establish seeing the object." If it is said that knowledge is recognized by other knowledge, that is also not acceptable, because ultimately, establishment or non-establishment is not reasonable, and simultaneity or non-simultaneity is not reasonable. Ultimately, if the recognizer is established, it is the same as eye consciousness and reason; if it is not established, then the vase will never be established. If it is established simultaneously, it will become the fault of multiple continuums. If it is established by a later recognizer, then the vase is not established when it exists, but is established later when it does not exist, therefore it will become an inverted establishment, because the times contradict each other. As it is said in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life, "Because it arises simultaneously with the mind, feeling does not see it. Arising earlier and later, it becomes memory, but does not experience it." The third situation is that if it is not established through one's own experience, then all judgments about the existence or non-existence, being or non-being of objects through direct perception and inference will become confused, because the mind must apprehend the object and name it, and the apprehension of the object itself must ultimately rely on one's own experience. If self-awareness is not admitted, then in the aspect that is not admitted, there is no reason for establishment through experience. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, "Because if it is not clear, then the object will become unclear." Through this method, liberation is attained only through one method, and even if one fabricates in conventional terms, one will not become a Buddha, and the mind does not recognize the mind, etc.
