If. Between those two, the step being taken now, its earlier part has passed, and its later part has not yet arisen, therefore the present does not exist, so there is no going. In the absence of going, the appearance of going is an illusion. For that reason, all arising, abiding, and ceasing are also non-existent but appear, and should be understood. From the *Secret Essence of Illusion*: Ema, wondrous and amazing Dharma! The secret of all the perfect Buddhas! From the unborn, all arises, and in the very arising, there is no arising. Ema, wondrous and amazing Dharma! The secret of all the perfect Buddhas! In the un-abiding, all abides, and in the very abiding, there is no abiding. Ema, wondrous and amazing Dharma! The secret of all the perfect Buddhas! From the absence of going and coming, there is going and coming, and in the very going and coming, there is no going and coming. Thus it is. Like this, by scripture and reason, the illusory appearance is utterly shattered like a rootless, empty image, and it should be understood that non-existence is merely clear appearance. The refutation of universals has two aspects: refuting the mere universal and refuting the substance. The first has two aspects: that which cannot be different from clarity and that which cannot be one. The first is: if the universal exists separately from each clarity, then because it cannot be determined from what can appear, and also on each clarity, it cannot be determined that "this is the universal," because it cannot be determined from what can appear, it is negated. The universal of the intermediate clarity does not exist, because it cannot be established in either being or not being. The second is that, taking one as a basis, like a vase, there is no other clarity besides the aggregation of the three conditions, so it is also unreasonable. If the three conditions of clarity, that is, the aggregation of the three conditions of the vase, exist, then the universal would become many, because the many and the essence are one, like the acacia related to many containers. Moreover, that universal would also be destroyed, because it is one with the clarity of destruction. It would also fall into contradictory unity, because the universal is black from the aspect of pervading charcoal, and white from pervading conch shells. The universal would become two parts, both destructible and indestructible, because the qualities of two parts pervade space and vases, etc. If this is accepted, then oneness is lost. Everything would also become the object of everything, for example, a human would become livestock, because there is no difference between a human and the universal, and there is no difference between the universal and livestock. The refutation of substance is: is the so-called substance a limb, or does it exist separately from the limbs?

If there are limbs, they will become multiple parts. If the body exists separately from the limbs, then the body as the generality of the limbs is unreasonable, because what is not a limb contradicts the generality of the limbs. Furthermore, examining through three contradictions: If the generality is a limb, then there arises the contradiction of depending on the limb. When the face is altered with paint, and the feet are not altered, it would follow that the feet are also altered, because the altered generality is inseparable from the body. Similarly, the contradiction of depending on the body is also like this. The movement of the hand would cause all the limbs to move, because the hand, which is inseparable from the body, is moving. The turning of the head would cause the entire body to turn, because the head, which is inseparable from the body, is turning. According to the second view, the body also does not exist separately from the limbs, because if it existed, it should be observable, but it is not observed. Moreover, there is nothing covering the outside of the limbs like clothing, because nothing other than skin is observed. Nor is there anything inside, because no body other than internal organs is observed. Therefore, through such analysis, all generalities are fabrications and have no intrinsic nature, and are only known to be mental delusions. Thus, when the hand is divided into three parts, the hand is not established. When it becomes five fingers, the hand is not established. When it becomes three joints, the finger is not established. Ultimately, when it becomes mere dust, even the dust is not established. Therefore, the so-called difference is not established in things, so generality and difference become fabrications, thereby realizing that they are without a basis of inherent nature. As stated in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "If the self exists in all the limbs, then as many limbs as there are, that many selves would exist. Likewise, since it is a collection of fingers, what then is the hand? That too is made of joints, and joints are divided into their own parts. By dividing the part into dust particles, there, that dust is also divided by directional parts. Since the directional parts are indivisible, like space, that dust is also non-existent. Who with discernment would cling to an illusory form like a dream?" And in the *Prajnaparamita*: "The purity of the body and the purity of space, for these two, there is no duality, because they are indivisible, not different, nor the same." Therefore, since the general body of the limbs is refuted, the small generality and the intermediate generality are also refuted in the same way. Thus, since the generality is refuted, the particular also does not exist, because the generality is refuted.
