Furthermore, in the case where nothing whatsoever is established, it is merely labeled as "space." Even in conventional terms, there is no space. The gray in between is appearance, and the black is darkness. Since nothing is established for anyone, it is merely calling illusion "space." The Ratnavali states, "Because there is no entity of form, space is also just a name." To conceive of seeing space is said to be foolish. The Catuhsataka states, "Ordinary people think that space is permanent. The wise do not see the meaning of those, even worldly people." The Samgraha states, "Beings often say in words that they see space. How can space be seen? Examine this meaning. Thus, seeing the Dharma has also been taught by the Thus-Gone One. No other example can be given for seeing." The Mother Sutra states, "In the realm of space, there is no east direction to be designated. South, west, north, above, below, and intermediate directions are not to be designated. Space is not round, not square, not blue, not yellow, not past, not future, not presently occurring. Space has no birth, cessation, abiding, or change. Space is not to be known, nor is it to be attained. Space is neither with form nor without form. Space is neither permanent nor impermanent. Space is neither appearance nor darkness. To say that space opens up opportunities for limitless beings, since there are no beings, one should know that there is no space. Since there is no space, one should know that there is no Mahayana." Therefore, the sutra says that the Mahayana is also just a conceptual construct, and it is said that it does not exist in reality. If someone thinks that when debating with non-Buddhists, the Buddhist scriptures cannot be used as a basis for establishment, that is not the case. Because after refuting with reason, scriptures are cited, there is a need to respectfully acknowledge that the words of the all-knowing teacher are reliable. Refuting impermanence has two parts: the non-establishment of the part with limbs and the non-establishment of impermanence. First, in establishing that a continent has parts with limbs, something like a snow mountain is not a part with limbs, because it does not exist like dust particles. Impermanence also

It is not established because, upon analysis, the parts and the whole of one and many are not established. It is not established that atoms are permanent and gross matter is impermanent, because it is impossible for one thing to have both permanent and impermanent aspects at the same time. When refuting qualities (藏文:ཡོན་ཏན་,梵文天城体:guṇa,梵文罗马拟音:guṇa,汉语字面意思:功德), there are seven: number, quantity, conjunction, distinction (藏文:བྱེ་བ།,梵文天城体:byeka,梵文罗马拟音:bheda,汉语字面意思:差别), other, non-other, and the qualities of space. First, regarding number, there are three that are not established: dependence, substance, and agent. Dependence is when one and nine are considered many and few, which are mutually dependent. Since the place of dependence and the object of dependence are not established, number is not established. Substance is not established because numbers such as one and one hundred are each individual, so they cannot be one. Even each individual is not established upon analysis, so substance is not established. Agent is not established because the agent of one khari (藏文:ཁལ་,梵文天城体:khal,梵文罗马拟音:khārī,汉语字面意思:容器单位) comes from one bre (藏文:བྲེ་,汉语字面意思:容器单位). If one bre (藏文:བྲེ་,汉语字面意思:容器单位) is divided and a single grain of barley is analyzed, it will be found to be broken, so number is not established. The Mother Sutra says, "In Suchness, there is no such thing as one." Even saying that it exists in convention is not permissible. The Naga Lord says: "From the conventional, one cannot separately perceive the ultimate. From the ultimate, one cannot separately perceive the conventional." Therefore, even in convention, things and non-things are not established. The assertion that things and non-things are conceived by logicians is a mistake. It is like children clinging to things, clinging to hair and the moon in water as real, and considering them to be substances. Even if in convention one clings to thoroughly distinguishing names and meanings and clings to self, for those who know reality, mountains and so on, although non-existent like the moon in water and hair, appear clearly. The appearance of things and non-things is not so, because the tenets of imputing names and meanings by mind are completely pacified. When refuting quantity, there are three that are not established: substance is not established because the substance of the height and size of a mountain is not established. Because it is small compared to a larger mountain, the establishment as a large substance is lost. Similarly, it is not established as a small substance, because it is large compared to a small one. Size is not established because the grossness of any thing cannot be larger than atoms, so size is not established. Even relying on other sizes, size cannot be one.
