The six faults are: As stated in that very text, many worldly affairs, many distracting gains, many frivolous words and conversations, many friendships with sinful companions, much wrong thinking, and many illnesses and demonic influences due to bad karma. The six faults of perversion are: As stated in the Sutra Requested by Ugraparipṛcchā, not acknowledging kindness and being deceitful, practicing Dharma out of attachment to gain and respect, being jealous and stingy of others' gains, not thinking of the qualities of the Dharma speaker but seeking faults, having faith in and relying on evil teachers, and seeking debate instead of seeking the merits of virtue. The six dharmas that deviate from the Mahayana are: As stated in the Mañjuśrīvikrīḍita Sutra, not seeking the Bodhisattva Pitaka but seeking the miraculous powers of non-Buddhists, giving worldly advice and not seeking extensive learning, seeking the hearing of words but not seeking liberation from them, seeking the Śrāvakayāna and Pratyekabuddhayāna Pitakas but not seeking the Bodhisattva Pitaka, not manifesting skillful means but seeking the cessation of afflictions, and desiring to be skilled in the sciences but not seeking virtuous friends. One should abandon such faults and listen. So, with what kind of qualities should one listen? Entering into listening to the Dharma, at any time one should listen in a good manner, with six precious thoughts such as the thought of jewels, six difficult practices such as enduring afflictions, six unchanging factors such as extensive learning and diligence, six things to do such as generating compassion, six needs such as understanding distinctions, and six kinds of seeking such as seeking the Dharma, one should listen with thirty-six qualities. First, the six precious thoughts are explained. As stated in the Sutra Requested by Suvikrāntavikrāmin, one should regard the Dharma-speaking teacher as a treasure of jewels, regard the Dharma as a wish-fulfilling jewel, regard listening to the Dharma as extremely rare, regard upholding and contemplating the Dharma as having precious meaning, regard individually contemplating the Dharma as not being found in hundreds of lifetimes, and regard abandoning those who seek the Dharma as abandoning nectar.

One should recognize (listening to the Dharma) as using medicine, and one should rely on the aspiration to make listening and thinking meaningful. The teaching of enduring the six difficult practices is: From that, one must endure the afflictions of heat and cold in relation to virtuous friends and the Dharma, one must endure the afflictions of hunger and thirst, one must endure the afflictions of abuse and ridicule, one must endure the afflictions of fatigue from travel, one must endure the afflictions of giving and seeking resources, and even one's cherished life must be risked and endured, which is very important. The six armors that are not changed by conditions are: From that, one should strive to ensure that even a short spear cannot prevent one from teaching the Dharma and diligently practicing the Dharma. One should accumulate much learning, one should retain much learning, one should understand the meaning of the Dharma, one should possess the practice of the Dharma, one should also rely on such people, and one should respect such people. The six special things to do are: From that, one must understand all roots of virtue, and having understood them, one must accomplish them properly, one must generate great compassion for sentient beings, one must fully uphold the supreme Dharma, one must not cut off the lineage of the Three Jewels, and one must fully ripen sentient beings. One must possess such special things to do. Accomplishing the six necessities is: As asked by Kashyapa, after hearing, it is necessary to understand the distinctions of the Dharma; after understanding, it is necessary not to do what should not be done; it is also necessary to teach others in this way; after teaching in this way, it is necessary for oneself and others to attain liberation; it is necessary for oneself and others to cultivate wisdom; and it is necessary to cut off the doubts that come from the four directions. In this way, one should diligently listen with six necessities. The six seekings are: In the Sutra of the Greatly Extensive Buddha Avatamsaka, one seeks the Dharma from the depths of one's heart without deception or falsehood; one seeks not for oneself, but for the benefit of all beings; one seeks not desiring gain and respect, but desiring to abandon the afflictions of samsara; one seeks without partiality, but with the entry of wisdom; one seeks without doubt, but to cut off the doubts of all beings.
