At that time, do not trust, do not speak of stability, do not be respectful, abide in the non-speaking yidam, and do not rejoice in the words spoken by him. If you do, you will break your vows, because you are controlled by evil friends. When abandoning, it is not out of hatred, but because this is an evil friend and companion, how pitiful. May he not control me and others. Whenever I have the ability, may I alone lead him from the evil path and place him on the good path. Thinking in this way, you must completely abandon him with the mind of abandoning closeness and familiarity. As it says in the Sutra of the Noble Jewel Cloud: Evil friends should be completely abandoned, that is, those who have broken their vows, broken their rituals, like noise, are lazy, like samsara, turn their backs on Bodhi, and associate with householders. When completely abandoning them, do not generate hatred, anger, or contempt towards them. Otherwise, keep the mind of completely abandoning association close. Therefore, if you abandon evil friends, as well as lamas, teachers, and abbots who are associated with evil, then liberation and all good dharmas will naturally be accomplished. Do not rely on or mix your mind with the side that should be abandoned. Because these certainties are taught in many sutras and tantras, those who desire liberation should abandon evil friends as described above, and respectfully rely on excellent spiritual friends. As it says in the Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish: Relying on a spiritual friend increases goodness; relying on an evil friend increases evil. For example, wind originally has no smell, but when it comes from a sandalwood forest, it will have a fragrance; when it comes from an unclean place, it will have a bad smell. And so on. The Extensive Commentary on the Ninth Chapter, Abandoning Evil Friends, from the Treatise on the Great Vehicle's Esoteric Instructions, The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury, is complete. Tenth Chapter, Commentary on the Chapter of the Speaker and Teacher. Thus, after explaining the place of hearing the sacred Dharma, next, it is necessary to determine how to listen. First, the general statement: Thus, evil friends...

Having abandoned [evil companions], if one relies on virtuous spiritual friends, then from that, the wisdom of listening arises first. It is said that this is the root of liberation. A person who seeks liberation is called a great being. He first abandons sinful friends and companions, and when he relies on an excellent virtuous spiritual friend, he asks what the main goal to be pursued is. He is told that it is excellent liberation. When he asks how to accomplish it and its nature, he is taught to make the foundation the discipline, and to first listen and contemplate, and later to meditate on its meaning. Therefore, it is said that first entering into excellent listening is the root of liberation. The basis is to be discipline and the Pratimoksha vows. As Nagarjuna said: Discipline is like the ground for cause and non-cause, The basis of qualities, as said by the Able One. As it is said. After that, one should listen, contemplate, and meditate. Vasubandhu also said: Dwelling in discipline, possessing listening and thought, One should diligently apply oneself to meditation. As it is said. How to extensively explain the meaning of listening? First, it is taught that the one to be tamed (the disciple) should examine the vessel (capacity) through the stages of the guru: Therefore, possessing the ten qualities of extensive learning, That excellent guru, for the fortunate disciple, When fully explaining the excellent Dharma, It is essential to first examine the faculties of the vessel. Among them, if the guru does not understand the type of intelligence of the one to be tamed, is ignorant of the meaning of what is to be known, is not skilled in the combination of words, only looks at the benefits of offerings, keeps the Dharma secret and does not reveal it, desires worldly fame, is lazy in the practice of Dharma, is tired of the work of benefiting others, is arrogant and jealous, is stingy with the Dharma, and contradicts the Dharma with his own conduct, these should be abandoned. One should listen to the Dharma from a guru who possesses ten complete qualities. As it is said in the "Noble Collection of the True Dharma Sutra": A speaker who possesses ten qualities is one who has heard much, accumulated listening, and holds listening, that is, he does not discriminate between high and low, has no doubt about the Dharma and its meaning, possesses definite words, has complete confidence, and even so, his diligence in seeking listening does not diminish, even if he understands time, measure, medicine, speech, and meaning, he does not abandon relying on older spiritual friends, and even if he understands the Sutras, the Vinaya, the Abhidharma, and Suchness, he asks others
