The Sutra Requested by the Sea states: "By relying on virtuous friends, one should diligently abandon non-virtuous friends." Why? The Intermediate Mother Sutra states: "Teaching the Dharma with attachment to all things is a sinful friendship." The Garland of Fingers Sutra states: "Beings in times of strife with inferior views, pretending to be practitioners and slandering the Great Vehicle, are hypocritical, beggarly villains, non-virtuous beings, blessed by demons, disturbed by heretics, and holding wrong views." The Sutra Requested by Noble Bliss states: "Sons of good family who do not wish to see all phenomena as illusory and understand their lack of inherent existence, but only strive for virtuous roots with attachment, are not practitioners but deceitful ones." The Jewel Heap Sutra states: "A monk who has a mind of duality is blessed by demons. Disbelief in the Great Vehicle is being deceived by demons." The advice to abandon is as follows: "Associating with them cuts off the path to liberation. If virtuous deeds diminish and the state of happy migrations is not achieved, what need is there to mention the attainment of peaceful enlightenment? Therefore, one should abandon sinful friends." Relying on sinful friends or bad gurus diminishes virtue and increases non-virtue. Not only will the temporary fruits of happiness of gods and humans not be achieved, but the path to liberation will also be cut off. Ultimately, there is no chance of achieving peaceful enlightenment. The Collection of Specially Expressed Verses states: "Those who lack faith and are stingy, who speak falsely and are divisive, the wise do not befriend, and do not associate with sinful people. People who should not be relied upon are relied upon, and their faults become faults. When a poisoned arrow is placed in a quiver, even the arrows that are not poisoned become contaminated." The reason for abandoning based on seeing harm is illustrated by the example: "Just as travelers walking on a dangerous path fear being robbed by bandits, they may lose their wealth and lives in this life, but they cannot steal eternal happiness." These are presented as clear examples. Therefore, the advice is to be cautious and not rely on an even more terrifying enemy. Non-virtuous

Those beings who rely on bad friends are despised by the holy ones, abandoned by the white-sided gods, and ruined in this place, the source of many harms and sufferings. In the next life, they fall into the lower realms and wander forever in the ocean of existence. Those who are separated from the supreme treasure of happiness and are not afraid are deceived by demons. If you rely on an unwholesome friend, you will be reproached by the holy ones, abandoned by the protecting deities, and suffer many harms and sufferings. All unwanted things will befall you, and not only will you suffer many faults in this life, but you will also go to the three lower realms in the next life and wander in samsara forever. Therefore, you should estimate the wisdom of escaping from ordinary enemies and advise others to stay away from sinful friends, because they will cause you to fall away from virtue. Even if you are taught this, if you are not afraid but rely on them again, you should know that you are being deceived by demons. Furthermore, you should avoid bad friends as you would fear hunters, hawks, mice, cats, executioners, and mad elephants. As it is said in the Sutra of the Great Nirvana: A Bodhisattva should fear sinful friends as much as he fears a mad elephant, because a mad elephant only destroys the body of this life, while a sinful friend destroys the eternal body and life of virtue. The example of what should be avoided by careful observation and analysis is: In this world, the best example is that when crossing a dangerous road, one seeks a guide and also observes whether one can do it oneself and asks others. This is seen even in accomplishing something for just one day, so how much more so when traveling the path to eternal happiness and liberation, one needs a guru as a guide. If one does not examine whether he has the qualities or not, but follows him casually, and does not ask other wise people, but blindly relies on bad companions, this is a very great fault, and this situation is very common nowadays. This is actually being directly destroyed by the demons who deceive one from liberation. Just relying on a bad teacher
