In this world, there is nothing more supreme than the virtuous and holy Lama, and there is no greater kindness than this. Therefore, to the Lama, if one only offers a small amount of mundane and trivial wealth, one should not be greedy for reward or count the amount, because this cannot repay the kindness, and the merit of the Dharma is immeasurable. Those inferior people, in front of the Guru, feign gratitude, but secretly proclaim to others again and again, "I offered this," and later regret what they have offered. Therefore, it is advised not to do so. The Sutra says, "Virtue, if counted, will be exhausted; regret, if arises, will also be exhausted." Furthermore, the holy Lama eliminates the decline of samsara, enables one to attain the wealth of Buddhahood, teaches the unsurpassed precious Dharma, and introduces the nature of mind as Buddha. One should not think of repaying only the kindness of his insignificant material possessions. If one offers to increase one's own merit, then the receiver is deeply kind. If the other party does not demand offerings, what kindness is there to repay? Therefore, remember the Guru's kindness, and in order to achieve happiness and well-being in this life and the next, and to accumulate provisions for the path, one should offer the Guru with all the good things one possesses, and diligently serve and respect the Guru without weariness. The *Arrayed Tree Sutra* says, "Son of good family, you should strive to serve your spiritual friend with a heart of gratitude. Why? Because all virtuous Dharmas are in his hands." The *Stainless Wisdom Sutra* says, "To the one who possesses the treasury, the Guru, who has served with reverence and respect? It cannot be fully proclaimed or counted. If someone does so, it will be fruitless and will be destroyed." Therefore, after pleasing the Guru with external offerings, one should also please the Guru internally with the supreme conduct of the three doors of body, speech, and mind. With the body, prostrations, circumambulations, offerings, etc.; also, protect the Guru from obstacles, obey orders, provide service; rise to greet, spread the seat, and perform various acts of respect. There are three ways to offer and serve the Guru: the lowest is to offer material possessions, the intermediate is to employ body and speech, and the highest is to please the Guru through practice. Material possessions only bring worldly happiness and are easy to lose. Therefore, the dedication of body and speech is the most supreme, like this...

It is said that among supports, the most precious is life. Being able to give up body and life without hesitation is extremely difficult. Therefore, making practice the essence is the best. The necessity of relying on a lama is also like this. Because the actions of the predecessors were also like this, and the necessity of the path also comes down to this. Even if one can give up body and life, it is still very difficult to accomplish practice. This should be fully recognized. Here, first, one should please the lama through the three doors of body, speech, and mind. From the aspect of the body, there are two things: what should be relied upon and what should be abandoned. What should be relied upon is to please with unwavering devotion and respect, aiming for liberation, and to serve and attend. Dedicating one's body to the lama's activities, such as prostrations, circumambulations, offering incense, flowers, lamps, etc. as external offerings, and offering food, meat, etc. as internal offerings, and realization, meditation, wisdom, etc. as secret offerings. Whether the lama is alive or after passing away, on the date when the lama manifested passing away, day or night, offerings should be made, and generosity should be given to the people. One should respectfully remember the lama's kindness, protect the lama from the dangers of fire, water, cliffs, wild animals, or enemies. For the lama's activities, one should send messages to different places. Provide whatever services are needed immediately. Spread cushions on the seat, attend when leaving, sweep the road, provide one's own clothes or silks, etc. Greet and send off with incense, inquire about well-being, sweep around the vicinity of the bedroom, offer a mandala, offer horses and mules, etc. as mounts to greet and send off. When seeing the lama, one should prostrate and ask for blessings, stand up and join palms, etc. In the same way as one treats the lama, if there is a consort, one should also respect her, attend to her, and treat those cherished by the lama in the same way. Because it is said, "What the lama loves is also like the lama." Even if one naturally pleases the lama, if one offends those around, it will cause discord, and ultimately may displease the lama, so one should also be grateful and win people's hearts. In short, serving the lama is something that all disciples should do,
