One should not estimate the Lama by comparing and measuring equally. If you view the Lama as a Buddha, since the crown of the head is not visible on the body of the Buddha, there will be the fault of measuring his body, as stated in the "Heap of Jewels Sutra." One should not step over the Lama's clothes and seat, one should not sit in front of the Lama in a lazy or flirtatious manner, one should not sit stiffly with arrogance, and one should not fail to offer the first portion when consuming food, etc. If one does not recognize various faults as faults, will one become a companion? Even if one knows, if one is disrespectful due to arrogance, it will be a hundred thousand times heavier than before, so it should be abandoned. Therefore, one should first examine and then take refuge in the Lama. From the time of taking refuge onwards, even if the Lama's behavior is bad, one should still respect him as a sacred Lama. As stated in the "Gongdü Sutra": The Lama should be highly revered; even if he is not a sacred being, he should be honored like a sacred being. If one despises and belittles him, one will fall headfirst into hell. So it is. Therefore, by thinking of the Lama's qualities and respecting him, immeasurable benefits will arise in every way. Even if an ordinary person is regarded as a Lama, one should be respectful, let alone towards sacred beings. Do not be casual like old friends, but always be respectful and serve them like new acquaintances. Here, too, one should understand through scriptural authority that disrespectful behavior itself becomes an obstacle. As stated in the "Tantra of the Sacred Yogini": If one steps over pillows, etc., one will be like climbing Mount Shalmali. If one measures the Lama's body with height, that person will be pierced by three hundred short spears. Also, as stated in the "Secret Tantra of the Dakini": Do not come from behind the Lama, do not step on the Lama's footprints, do not walk in front of the Lama, and if others look askance at someone facing away from the Lama, it will become the karma of slander and sin. Do not walk on the Lama's right side; for those who like to walk with ordinary people, walk on the left side of the direction the Lama is pointing. Also, as stated in the "Crown-Jewel-Turning-Wheel Sutra": For the Lama who teaches the truth, if one steps over the shadow of his head, etc., one will abandon the right path and fall into hell. One should contemplate these teachings, and with the caution of a new bride just arrived, abandon impure behaviors and treat him with respect. Just as with the body, there are two aspects of speech to be adopted and abandoned. What should be practiced is to receive teachings with respect and service, and speech should also be with pleasant praise and prayers.

How to act? With gentle and pleasant words, accompanied by honorifics and etiquette. Act in accordance with the teachings, and praise what is said as good. One should also proclaim the virtues of the guru to others. Pray with a melodious voice and a devout heart. With utmost reverence, using words carefully chosen from all aspects, praise the guru, take refuge in the guru, and treat everything related to the guru with honorifics. Whether in public or in private, one should praise the preciousness of the guru's sacred words, etc. Remember and proclaim the meaning contained in the guru's teachings; this is the service of speech. If the guru's teachings are slightly forgotten, one should think: I have not yet fully understood the guru's intention; the surface meaning of this statement seems contradictory, but it is actually a fault of my own understanding. Regarding the guru's words, whether Dharma or worldly matters, if there is any error, one should also think that it is because one has not understood. If asking others, one should also answer: I have not been able to grasp this meaning. One should never say or think that the guru's words are incorrect, not even for a moment, as this sin is even greater than slandering the Buddha's words. Therefore, one should follow the guru's teachings. If any action seems inappropriate, one should first quote the guru's words, and after beginning, then state the advantages and disadvantages, so that one can surely understand the guru's intention. Regarding the guru's words, one should think of them in terms of their virtues and rejoice and praise them. For those who do not know or know very little, and when going to other places, one should speak of the certain virtues of one's guru. Whether four times a day or always remembering the guru, one should pray with the most beautiful voice. In addition, one should praise with words, use pleasant and gentle language, have a kind face, speak frankly and directly, praise virtues in the words of others, respectfully respond to the guru's teachings, not open one's mouth wide, cover one's mouth and nose when sneezing, and ask for the guru's permission in whatever one does. At the beginning of doing good deeds, one should remember the guru and praise and pray. As stated in the *Arya Ratnamegha Sutra*: Having performed service, one sits on the seat. One proclaims praises. One offers words of "Excellent!" And also in the *Samadhi of Direct Realization of the Buddha at Present*: Reverence...
