To cut off all sides, thinking that no matter what, one must not be influenced by them, and one must do it in such a way, one must definitely put on the full armor. Furthermore, thinking of the kindness of the Lama, the guide to liberation, and pleasing him, just as clear water can reflect images like a flawless jewel after being turbid. By purifying the water of obscurations, the image of qualities can be revealed, just like gold in ore and precious treasures underground, and the Sugata dwelling in a lotus, revealing the all-pervading, pure realm of Bodhicitta. Just like the darkness of night, like a guide going to the island of liberation, one travels to the source of deep waters. Therefore, one should rely on the holy ones. How should one rely on them? In the Sutra of the Arrayed Tree Trunk, it says: With a mind like the earth, not tiring of bearing all burdens; with a mind like a vajra, not being divided; with a mind like a wheel-circumference mountain, not being moved by suffering; with a mind like a servant, doing all that is commanded; with a mind like a broom, completely abandoning pride; with a mind like an elephant, bearing heavy burdens; with a mind like a dog, not being angry with the master; with a mind like a boat, not tiring of coming and going; with a mind like a mother, not being weary of afflictions; with a mind like a well-trained horse, abandoning insubordination; with a mind like a mountain, not being moved by circumstances; with a mind like a son of an outcast, having no fame; like a bull with its horns cut off, without arrogance; like a loving mother gazing with longing at her only child; like a bridge, reaching the pure other shore; like a kite with its string cut, without conceit; with a mind like a young prince who does not transgress the commands of the Dharma king, one should serve. One should serve in a way that does not violate the commands. Furthermore, in the Samadhi Sutra of the Present Buddha Manifest, it also says: Virtuous friends are difficult to find, therefore one should respectfully offer to the Khenpo and Acharya. For whoever one hears the Dharma from, and asks to write scriptures, one must generate the perception of the teacher and the perception of the virtuous friend, and ripen that Dharma and perfect Bodhi.

For the sake of practice, one should generate great joy and respect towards them. As it is said in the Sutra of Ten Dharmas: "By asking the Dharma-holder with respect, one generates the perception of light. One generates the perception of a teacher towards them. One generates the perception of a virtuous friend. One generates the perception of being liberated from the ocean of existence. One generates the perception of seeking oneself wandering in samsara. One generates the perception of awakening from the sleep of ignorance. One generates the perception of rescuing oneself from drowning in the mud of samsara. One generates the perception of guiding oneself from the evil path to the good path. One generates the perception of being liberated from the bondage of the prison of existence. One generates the perception of a doctor when suffering from a long illness. One generates the perception of a rain cloud that pacifies the fire of afflictions." As it is said in the Noble Sadāprarudita Sutra: "From whomever one hears the Perfection of Wisdom, one should create the perception of the Buddha towards them. Because I hear the Dharma from them, I will quickly become irreversible from unsurpassed Bodhi. By attending to the Buddha, I will be born in their Buddha-field. I will completely abandon the unfavorable conditions. I will completely obtain leisure and endowments." Thus, one should rely on the Dharma speaker by generating the perception of a teacher. Furthermore, it is taught to rely on them by contemplating various examples: By the examples of an ascetic, an army, a warrior, a king, a teacher, a doctor, a benefactor, and a friend, one should diligently rely on a virtuous friend. By doing so, one will accomplish happiness and Dharma in this life and the next. The instruction for relying on them with constant diligence, cherishing, and devotion is: Even non-Buddhists exert great effort in meaningless austerities, such as relying on the five fires. Why should I not generate faith and service towards the Lama who leads me from happiness to happiness? Worldly people respect and offer to lords and masters for the sake of military assistance. Why should I not offer to the Lama who protects me from all the sufferings of samsara? For a moment of fear
