Thus it is said. If it does not arise from the gurus, it is impossible to attain accomplishment. If it does not arise from the gurus, it is impossible for one called Buddha to appear. It is the qualified guru who turns the helm of existence upwards. Thus it is said. Therefore, because there are these reasons and countless others, which, even if spoken of extensively for an eon, cannot be exhausted, from the very first practitioner until Buddhahood is attained, one should always learn to rely on the guru with reverence, without weariness. The Noble Array of Trees Sutra states: Speaking of the qualities and praises of the virtuous friend, even if spoken of extensively for an eon, they cannot be exhausted, therefore one should always rely on the virtuous friend. Having seen the reason for relying in this way, one should engage in reliance, and the instruction is to seek it completely for the sake of reliance: That is to say, the glorious and venerable gurus, go to the place where they reside, with great faith, respect, and service, from the very beginning, seek to please them. Do not investigate "what is this like," do not argue, do not be disrespectful, and do not do anything frivolous. The holy ones are upright in nature, and as soon as they see the behavior of others, they immediately think, "It is not like that," and become displeased, and the initial connection is broken. If it is an ordinary person, it may be possible to reverse it later, so one should first learn to please them with great respect. The Array of Trees Sutra states: You should not be weary of seeking a virtuous friend when seeking the conduct of enlightenment. Having found one, you should serve him diligently without forgetting to follow him. You should not be weary of all burdens, and you should generate the perception of being like the earth. You should listen to what is commanded with the perception of being like a servant. That is to say, when seeking the conduct of enlightenment, seeking a virtuous friend is the method, so one should widely ask others where he resides, and one should also go to different directions to investigate, no matter what difficulties arise, do not...

Seeking with a thirsting mind gathers the ocean of merit and wisdom, and protects from the direction of sin and non-virtue. As stated in the Sutra of the Moon Lamp: "If one desires to quickly attain the unsurpassed Bodhi, one should generate the mind of Bodhi from great compassion, initiate diligence, disregard body and life, and constantly seek the virtuous friend who teaches the sacred Dharma, and serve them with a sincere heart, free from deceit and pretense. By seeking and serving in this way, without weariness, one will obtain the Dharma of manifesting enlightenment in bliss." Also, as stated in the Sutra Requested by the Son of No Torment: "For the sake of seeking a virtuous friend, one should not spare even body and life. One should not grasp at various things, nor be attached to wealth. One should not desire gain and respect. One should abandon all that and seek." Furthermore, disregarding body and life, not seeking worldly pleasures, realizing all dharmas as emptiness, firm in the aspiration for omniscience, contemplating the nature of the Dharmadhatu, desiring to transcend all existence, relying on the space of the Dharmadhatu without abode, accomplishing the aspirations of all Bodhisattvas, purifying all Buddha-fields, and with the wisdom of Bodhisattvas being unobstructed and extremely purified, one should respectfully serve the Lama and diligently seek them. Also, as stated in the Arrangement of Trees: "Bodhisattvas who are fully embraced by virtuous friends do not fall into evil destinies, do not comprehend what is not to be done, turn away from the place of carelessness, liberate from the city of Samsara, do not violate the precepts of Bodhisattvas, are manifestly superior to all the world, and are difficult to be overcome by karma and afflictions. Son of lineage, therefore, with such constant mindfulness, one should go to the presence of virtuous friends." Also, as stated in the Sutra of Four Dharmas: "Monks, Bodhisattvas, for the sake of a virtuous friend, do not abandon them even for their life." Also, as stated in the Pratimoksha of Bodhisattvas: "Out of respect for the Khenpo and Acharya, one does not abandon any treasure."
