Having repeatedly examined, we should especially praise the great kindness of the Guru towards us. As stated in the Root Tantra of the Guhyasamaja: "Because of the equality of the elements, activities, and nature itself, the Buddhas and the Guru are equal. In order to guide beings on the path, (the Guru) is superior to the Buddhas themselves." And: "The Guru is equal to all the Buddhas, the Guru is superior to all the Buddhas, being the treasure of supreme qualities, the glorious Guru I bow to with my head." Furthermore, in the past, when the Buddhas tamed beings, they accomplished the benefit of beings by appearing as the Buddhas themselves. Then, when they accomplished the benefit of beings by appearing as Arhats and Panditas, they emanated as them to compile the teachings and compose treatises. Nowadays, they emanate as spiritual friends to uphold the teachings and guide beings on the path to liberation, thus accomplishing the benefit of beings. In the Noble Nirvana Sutra and the Great Drum Sutra, it is said: "Do not grieve, Ananda! Do not lament, Ananda! In the future, I will emanate as spiritual friends to benefit you and others." In short, all qualities arise from the Guru, and establishing the great and excellent path also depends on the Guru. As stated in the Arrayed Tree Sutra: "The spiritual friend is born into the lineage of the Buddhas, like the eldest son of a Chakravartin king. Because he generates the lineage of qualities, he is like a mother. Because he accomplishes vast benefit, he is like a father. Because he protects from evil, he is like a maternal aunt. Because he teaches the trainings, he is like a teacher. Because he introduces one to the path of the perfections, he is like a guide. Because he heals the diseases of afflictions, he is like a doctor. Because he protects from fear, he is like a hero. Because he liberates from the river of samsara, he is like a boatman. All the practices of a Bodhisattva depend on the spiritual friend." Our teacher, the Buddha Shakyamuni, also attained Buddhahood by relying on a Guru. Therefore, it is reasonable to always rely on a Guru. As stated in the Gongdü Sutra: "Without relying on a teacher, Buddhas will never arise. I have never seen them arise, and if they did, it would contradict the sacred teachings." And as stated in the Kalachakra Tantra: "Therefore, the root of all dharmas is the Guru Vajradhara."
