Who definitely saves from all kinds of fears, and who leads to nirvana, is the lama. There is no other than the lama. It is said. Then, aren't there Buddhas who possess skillful means and compassion? That is because they also do not arise without a lama. First, rely on the lama, therefore the lama is the protector of all. In the Gongdü it says: From the Buddhas of a thousand kalpas, the lama should be known as sacred. Why do all the Buddhas of the kalpas, arise relying on lamas? It is said. Therefore, the lama, the virtuous friend, saves from fear, and shows all goodness, therefore one should rely on him. In the Tree Arrangement it says: The virtuous friend saves from all the fears of wandering in samsara, and shows all goodness, therefore always never forget to rely on him with reverence like an ornament on the head. Furthermore, the lama saves from temporary and ultimate fears, and is the best in accomplishing all excellent deeds. That is it. Bodhisattvas who are completely taken by the virtuous friend, do not fall into bad destinies. They do not turn back from the Mahayana. They do not fall to the level of hearers and solitary Buddhas. It is difficult to be overcome by karma and afflictions. They completely transcend the stage of children. They do not violate discipline. By being protected by him, sinful friends do not confuse them. By being cared for by him, they do not fall from the nature of a bodhisattva. They are not defiled by worldly dharmas, therefore they are truly noble. Serving him means acting without being confused in all actions. His accomplishment is unwavering from all endeavors. Being close to him means not being defeated by the actions of demons. Furthermore, by practicing well according to the lama's words, the protectors, the oath-bound ocean, also save from all obstacles and harms. In Gongpa Düpa it says: If you do not break the command and protect the Dharma, the powerful Dharma-protecting guardians always protect like a son. It is said. Fifth, to increase the wealth of qualities, there is no other, therefore it is appropriate to rely on him. There is no other who completes qualities. Rely on the lama, because prosperity comes from him. In the beginning, middle, and end, for liberation, for the wealth of qualities, rely with great respect and reverence. Not knowing anything due to ignorance

Furthermore, if one relies on a virtuous spiritual friend, it causes special qualities of Dharma to arise in one's being, because he is the source of all qualities. Therefore, those who are beginners seeking the path to liberation, desiring and striving for liberation; those who have entered the path and are learning, wishing to transcend the realm of demons and to attain higher qualities; and those who ultimately wish to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, turning towards the fruit of liberation, should rely on the guru, the virtuous spiritual friend. As it is said in the "Nirvana of Glorious Arising": "All the qualities of a Bodhisattva arise from the virtuous spiritual friend." And in the "Inconceivable Secret Sutra": "Bodhisattvas, relying on the guru, should perfect all qualities of Dharma." And in the "Earth Essence Ten Wheel Sutra": "By honoring and serving the guru, one completely grasps the inconceivable qualities of Dharma. One should regard all the qualities and transformations of the Buddhas as arising from this." And in the "Bodhisattva Pitaka Sutra": "In short, if one enters the instructions of the virtuous spiritual friend, one completely grasps ten inexpressible billions of trillions of qualities." Therefore, one should respectfully rely on such a supreme guru. In the "Condensed Meaning" it is also said: "Therefore, Lord of Lanka, those with intelligence should, with joy and respect, show reverence three times with longing to those who have become supreme yogis, and touch their feet with their heads." Sixth, because the teacher is the most supreme and without equal, one should also rely on him. Especially in this degenerate age, there will be no other teacher than the loving guru, therefore, rely on him with great respect, even greater than that for the Buddha. In the past, in the pure age when the Buddhas resided, the Buddhas themselves appeared as teachers to accomplish benefit. But now it is an extremely degenerate age, when life, wealth, Dharma, and guides are in decline. Since there is no other who can directly teach the Dharma and benefit beings other than the true guru, the virtuous spiritual friend, one should rely on him with great respect, like the Buddha or even greater. Moreover, from the perspective of the nature of self-existing purity, accomplishing benefit, and the greatness of activity, the guru and the Budd
