Moreover, one must first rely on the lama as the helmsman of the boat, therefore, one must strive to please him. That lama must also be relied upon as one who possesses the qualities. Even for merely crossing a stream, if one relies on a good boat and a skilled and powerful boatman, then to be liberated from the endless river of samsara, relying on the profound Dharma and the qualities of a lama who possesses mastery and accomplishment, is the supreme and cherished instruction for those who desire the island of liberation. Among these, there are many aspects of the qualities of a truly qualified lama, but here they are summarized into seven aspects. First, the explanation of the qualities of the wish-fulfilling supreme lama: He is skilled in means, possesses immeasurable compassion, has a treasury of Sutras and Tantras like a wish-fulfilling jewel, and guides beings. The lama who is free from faults and perfect in qualities is like a real Buddha in this degenerate age. One should attend to him with great respect and reverence. He is skilled in the means of accomplishing great aims with little effort, and he bestows immeasurable benefits on others with tireless compassion. With the immaculate eye of wisdom, he has extensively heard the meaning of the Sugata's scriptures, the Sutras and Tantras, possessing a vast treasury of Dharma. With immeasurable activities that turn the course of beings upwards, he guides them to the path of liberation. His body, speech, and mind are free from the defilements of negativity, and he is free from all faults, fulfilling all the desires of himself and others. That lama, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, a wish-granting tree, is like a real Buddha in this degenerate age. Therefore, it is advised to attend to him with great faith. As it is said in the 'King of the Array of Qualities': 'Son of lineage, you should rely on those virtuous friends who are skilled, clear, and completely moistened with compassion.' The second quality: the lama who is perfect in inherent qualities is: of good lineage, possessing shame and modesty, with complete senses. Possessing love and compassion, vast wisdom, extensive learning, subdued in body, speech, and mind, and possessing great patience. Honest and without deceit in his heart, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, one should attend to him with a hundredfold faith. Because he is born into a noble lineage such as a royal family, he has great shame and modesty. Because he has accumulated merit in previous lives, his senses are complete and pure. Because he is born into the Mahayana lineage, he possesses love and compas-
