And when seeing dogs, etc., one sees that they will harm one's body and runs away, and experiences suffering, etc. That is, the collection of many limbs and branches is called the body, and being separated and left behind is also called the body. Although the gods do not have what is left behind, they are also called the body from the aspect of being separated from it. What is it that body, meaning, and place appear separately? Or perhaps it is sufficient for everything to appear as a place. Or perhaps it is thought that it is sufficient for only meaning and body to appear, but it is not so. To establish the reason for appearing separately. Thus, on the basis of the ālaya, three habitual tendencies, established from beginningless time, become familiar. In all lifetimes, it appears that way. Because the ālaya has three different habitual tendencies, due to that, three appearances also arise in the way things appear, like different sprouts from three different seeds. Moreover, wherever it arises, as long as the habitual tendencies are not exhausted, it appears that way, just as the body, mind, and place appear in a dream. The difference of former habitual tendencies is that beginningless habitual tendencies generate former lifetimes, and the continuity of that familiarity generates this life, just as daytime generates dreams. From the continuity of the habitual tendencies of this life, the body, meaning, and place of the future appear. These methods are in the Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras: "Three kinds of three kinds of appearances." It is said that because three kinds of habitual tendencies are established on the basis of the ālaya, three kinds of different appearances appear. This was taught by Lord Maitreya. Now, refuting the wrong conceptions of those who are devoid of the eye of much learning and are far from the way of the supreme vehicle, the biased ones: The ignorant all say that everything is mind, They are very confused about the meaning of the three appearances. Faults are many, mutually confused, and extremely excessive, Abandon the bad systems of those who promote them! Those who do not know the way of the Great Vehicle say with arrogance that all phenomena, samsara, nirvana, inner and outer, vessel and contents, are their own minds, and it seems that they are deceiving many people. Thus, they also do not understand the meaning of the three appearances spoken of in the Great Vehicle scriptures. The habitual tendencies established in the mind are mind, but how can the habitual tendencies established in the body and place be mind? If so, there are many faults. The body and appearance do not

If, according to what is seen and touched, the mind also becomes like that? Or, like the mind, would the body and things become impossible to see and hear? Or would the mind have color, shape, and seeing and hearing, etc.? Or when one becomes a Buddha or falls into a bad realm, would all appearances become like that? Or would many appearances be the same object, so the consciousness would become one? Or when appearances disappear, would the mind become like that? Or would earth, water, fire, and wind become sentient beings, so it would be reasonable to belong to the camp of the non-Buddhist thinkers. Confusing each other, just as one's own object can cognize, so also the external material object would become self-aware, and one's own mind would exist outside, because the appearance exists outside. The appearance would exist within oneself, because the mind is clear and aware within. It is unreasonable for the object of appearance to exist outside and self-awareness to exist inside to appear as different, because one entity does not have two parts. It is too extreme that from the time one is not born, one's own mind should exist in this place. Because this appearance exists in this place from the time one is not born. And when one dies, the appearance of this place, such as the land, etc., would disappear, etc. And when one goes to another place, this appearance should also move there, because this is one's own mind, and the mind follows one's movement. Or when one goes to another place, one's own mind should remain in this place, because this appearance remains here. Because there are so many kinds of faults such as these, one should abandon the bad tenets of those who are foolish and without learning, like cowherds. Whatever appears is of such a nature. And "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind," etc. And "The mind disturbed by habit, various appearances arise," etc. Since it is said like that, is it not the mind? Reply: That is from the perspective that appearance and the object of appearance are different, one should understand that appearance is mind, because clinging to appearance and non-appearance is one's own mind. Saying that appearance is mind is to prevent non-Buddhists from clinging to external objects as real, it is aimed at the views of the Hearers' Vehicle, etc. It does not mean that mountains, etc., are mind.
