Peace, and self-realization as sacred, this is endowed with five necessities. Thereafter, the vow to compose a treatise: What the fortunate ones should seek, Is the supreme state of liberation, The means to accomplish it, Among all is the pinnacle, Now I will make it very clear. The noble ones, at the beginning of composing a treatise, first praise, in order to completely pacify interruptions, and immediately achieve completion, therefore they vow to compose. Otherwise, it is slightly difficult, and because the state of words and meanings is unstable, they become lazy, or are harmed by others, or seeing their own fatigue, they think of abandoning it halfway, in order to completely protect against these. Among them, whoever desires enlightenment is a person with good fortune for the Dharma, the supreme thing they should seek is liberation, and the pinnacle of the means to achieve it is the Mahayana path, the extremely good, profound, and vast nature of which should be taught, thus the vow. This is a good indication of the necessity and connection of this treatise, for wise people, when engaging in anything, will consider what is expressed, what is necessary, what is the ultimate necessity, and what is the connection, and after seeing these, they will engage well, therefore it is said here. What is the difference between the profound and vast states? What is the nature of hearing, thinking, and meditating for those who wish to abandon samsara and attain liberation? This is what this treatise should explain. From its nature, in twenty-two chapters, carefully examine and rely on this to enter the path of liberation, which is the necessity. Achieving complete enlightenment after entering the path is the necessity of necessity, the ultimate necessity. Relying on what is expressed and the expression, the fruit of accomplishment is achieved through true practice, and they also arise depending on each other, therefore they are connected, this is the connection. With these, the cause for entering the composition of the treatise has been explained. Now, the body of the treatise to be entered will be explained, that is, the nature of samsara should be abandoned, and the nature of nirvana should be attained, these two are the nature of this treatise, like the vajra's establishment. Among them, ignorance is the confused samsara, first explaining the root from which confusion arises.

The very first clear light is the essence of the Sugata. The ultimate Alaya is unconditioned by nature. From the beginning, it is pure like the sky, but due to the stirring of the imprints of ignorance, sentient beings are deluded. That ground, like the sky, is the basis in relation to samsara, empty from the beginning and selfless in essence. Like the sun and moon, it is radiant and spontaneously accomplished. Since it exists from beginningless time, it is immutable. Because it transcends the limits of elaboration, it is naturally radiant. Because it abides in the realm where form and wisdom are inseparable, it is the essence of the Sugata. The state of being upon which the dharmas of samsara and nirvana depend is called the ultimate Alaya, which is unconditioned and abides as the great, primordial purity. Moreover, the dharmas of samsara, karma and kleshas, depend in a way that is without dependence, like clouds depending on the surface of the sky. They do not touch or cling to the ground, but abide in its nature. In reality, because there is no inherent nature, the dependent and the depended upon are not established, but the appearance of dependence is merely imputed. As it is said in the Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra: "Earth depends on water, water on wind, and wind abides in space. Space does not abide in wind and water, nor does it abide in the element of earth. Likewise, the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas depend on karma and kleshas. Karma and kleshas are not in accordance with proper attention, but always abide in attention. Improper attention abides in the purity of mind. The dharmas that are the nature of mind do not abide in anything." Thus it is said. The dharmas of nirvana depend inseparably like the sun and its rays, and therefore abide without separation from the beginning. The nature of these will be explained in detail below, so I will not elaborate here. In the nature of such a ground, the clouds of adventitious obscuration are ignorance and conceptualization. When the latent tendencies of grasping and being grasped arise, imprints are made on objects, meanings, and bodies, obscuring the radiant essence of the nature of awareness. The original state of being, naturally radiant, is from its very nature. From that nature arises beginningless ignorance, the self-arisen aspect of clear potential. The arising of the latent tendencies of grasping and being grasped, which is caused by that, is the adventitious obscuration. Placing the three imprints of mind on the Alaya is like placing imprints on objects such as form, and grasping them.
