It refers to the accumulation of consciousness and the habitual tendencies that appear as if they exist within oneself, even though they do not, obscuring the primordial ground and the luminous essence of wisdom, like dust covering a mirror, thus wandering in this samsara. As stated in the Great Tantra of the Magical Net: "Emaho! From the essence of the Sugata-garbha, emanates through the karma of one's own conceptual thoughts." The analogy for obscuration is: Just as clouds obscure the sun in the sky, virtues are not manifest, and the illusion of pleasure and pain appears. From the beginning, the luminous expanse of the dharmadhatu, like the sky, is spontaneously present like the sun of wisdom, but it is obscured by the sudden obscuration, like clouds. Therefore, the immeasurable qualities of the dharmadhatu and wisdom, the Dharmakaya and Rupakaya, are not apparent in the state of ordinary beings, because the clouds of habitual tendencies of various illusions of pleasure and pain appear. Thus, the nature of the mind is luminous, and all obscurations can be purified, being adventitious. As it is said in the Pramanavarttika: "The nature of the mind is luminous, and obscurations are adventitious." How is it like clouds? Just as rain comes from clouds and crops grow, due to ignorance and the thoughts of grasping and being grasped, the clouds of the mind churn violently, raining down the karma of good and evil, and the resulting fruit is the nature of the three realms of samsara. Just as rain clouds move in the sky, rain falls, and become the cause of crop growth, from the naturally pure state of mind, the attachment of grasping and being grasped universally arises, thereby accumulating various forms of virtuous and non-virtuous karma that create samsara, experiencing them in the various appearances of the three realms and six realms, and the crops of various pleasures and pains grow, thus constantly revolving like a fire wheel. As it is said in the Precious Garland of the Middle Way: "The cycle of samsara is like a wheel of fire, revolving interdependently, this conditioned phenomenon is considered samsara." Thus, in samsara, the distinctions of the three habitual tendencies are explained in detail: All illusory appearances arise from the three habitual tendencies, namely, the habitual tendency of the object, the container world, and the forms and so on that depend on it.

Five kinds. From beginningless time, three different kinds of habitual patterns are established on the alaya, and three different appearances appear distinctly. The habitual patterns of objects include the external world of containers and contents, such as form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Although they do not exist either internally or externally, they appear as if they exist externally. They appear in the mind, and one clings to them as real, that is, one clings to the objects of acceptance and rejection. Regarding the objects that are clung to, the thought that this is form, and the discrimination in the external world, is the discrimination of what is grasped. The same is true for sound and so on. The inner self that appears as mind is the habitual pattern of meaning, the eight aggregates of consciousness. And the virtuous and non-virtuous actions that depend on it. Depending on the alaya of various habitual patterns. The alaya consciousness, and the five that arise from it, such as eye consciousness, and the mind consciousness that follows the sense objects, and the afflicted mind, these eight are called the grasping mind. The discrimination of them is the discrimination of grasping. Why is it grasping? The ground of the alaya habitual patterns, its nature is ignorance, its appearance is not related to any appearing object, it is only in a state of non-thought, therefore it is grasping formless habitual patterns. From its state, only the part of clear awareness that is not related to the object is the alaya consciousness, grasping the habitual patterns of form, and although the five sense consciousnesses that arise from it are non-conceptual, they also grasp the samadhi habitual patterns of the ground of form. The afflicted mind and the mind consciousness both grasp the habitual patterns of desire. These eight aggregates of consciousness also grasp their respective objects without discrimination and with discrimination, therefore they are called the grasping mind. Depending on it, is the virtuous merit that is aroused and accumulated by it, and the non-virtuous things, like gold and rust, leave habitual patterns in the mind. To completely pacify the activity of mind and mental factors is the meaning of Madhyamaka. Such consciousnesses rely closely on the habitual patterns of the body, the forms of the six realms. The limbs and parts that depend on it. Gods, humans, and so on, appear as various bodies, therefore they cling to my body, even in dreams they cling to water, fire, cliffs, and enemies.
