Now, let me explain in detail the process of the decrease of lifespan. When people have a lifespan of eighty thousand years, Jambudvipa is prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, has good harvests, and is filled with many people. The distance between the palaces of kings and the villages, cities, and towns is only as far as a bird can fly. At that time, girls are married at the age of five hundred. The only illnesses people have are those caused by desire and not eating. The grain stalks are very large, with each stalk producing four large bre of grain. During this time, many Wheel-Turning Kings also appear. Their wealth is vast, comparable to the realm of the desire gods. From immeasurable years to eighty thousand years of human lifespan, seven generations of Wheel-Turning Kings appear, such as "Born from the Head," "Superior Ordination," "Virtue," and "Extremely Beautiful." The Wheel-Turning Kings are of four types: the iron wheel rules over one continent, the copper wheel over two, the silver wheel over three, and the gold wheel over four. Wherever the king goes, the wheel leads the way, and he enjoys the seven treasures. It is said that the wheel is located on the steps of Mount Meru and appears spontaneously above the king's palace. Some texts say that it is a lesser wheel of the god Indra. The seven treasures are: the wheel, the jewel, the queen, the minister, the elephant, the horse, and the general. The near seven treasures are: bedding, bed, cushion, knife, shoes, leather, and clothes. Wheel-Turning Kings appear when lifespans are from immeasurable to eighty thousand years. They do not appear below that lifespan because the king's lifespan and wealth are not complete. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, appear during the declining ages, especially when lifespans are below eighty thousand years, because above that lifespan, suffering is less, and even if the Dharma is taught, it is difficult to be effective, and the opportunity to realize the truth is less. They do not appear below a lifespan of one hundred years because the five degenerations are rampant, and even if the Buddha appears, it will become a basis for slander and is therefore not suitable as a vessel. The five degenerations...

The fifth is the age, lifespan, views, sentient beings, and afflictions. That is, the turbidity of lifespan and the turbidity of time cause the decline of life and resources. The turbidity of afflictions and views causes the decline of virtuous aspects. The turbidity of sentient beings causes the decline of the physical body. It causes the decline of health, strength, intelligence, diligence, and meditation. Some say that Buddhas only appear when the lifespan is between eighty thousand and one hundred years, which is a sign of short-sightedness. Because in the time of immeasurable lifespan, the Buddha Vipashyin appeared. In other worlds, the protector Amitayus Buddha appeared in the time of immeasurable lifespan, and so on, which can refute the above view. Therefore, the first of the thousand Buddhas of this Fortunate Aeon, Krakucchanda Buddha, appeared when the lifespan was eighty thousand years, then Konakamuni Buddha at forty thousand years, Kashyapa Buddha at twenty thousand years, Shakyamuni Buddha at one hundred years now, and so on until the last Raudrakirti Buddha. Vipashyin Buddha, Sikhin Buddha, and Vishvabhu Buddha appeared before that and are called the intermediate Buddhas. It is said that such Buddhas will appear in the future, so it is uncertain. However, from a time long after immeasurable years, when it is close to decline or declines by one year, but still has the name of immeasurable, it will appear. Pratyekabuddhas appear in both increasing and decreasing aeons. They appear when Buddhas have not appeared, or when the teachings have disappeared after they have appeared, and when the Shravakas have been exhausted. As it says in the Root Wisdom Treatise: When Buddhas have not appeared, and the Shravakas have been exhausted, the wisdom of the Pratyekabuddhas arises without dependence. That is the meaning. Appearing at that time is because of fear of urging others to do things for the benefit of others. That is, in the age when lifespan is close to decline, it declines due to the influence of non-virtue. Between sixty thousand and twenty-one thousand years, lifespan, enjoyment, and the qualities of the place will decline. The reasons for the decline will be explained as follows. Many laws of Samsara appear in the world, non-virtuous deeds increase, and from eighty thousand to seventy thousand, sixty thousand, twenty thousand, one thousand, one hundred, and ten years, as lifespan declines, so does enjoyment.
