exists. Between the north of the snowy mountains and the fragrant south, there is the great lake Manasarovar, which is square in all directions, fifty yojanas in breadth, and filled with cool water, hence it is called Manasarovar. In it dwells the dragon king Manasarovar, and the lake is beautiful in shape and pleasing to the eye, filled with water possessing eight qualities. The eight qualities are as stated in the Vinaya Sutra: "Pure, soft, and clean, clear, cool, and unclouded, it does not harm the stomach when drunk, and is also gentle to the throat. These are the eight qualities of water." As such, there are no unclean things such as foul odors at the entrance and in the stream, so it is pleasing to the mind and therefore pure. It is moderately cool and warm, and the things used make the body healthy, so it is soft. There are no small or large creatures that make the water dirty, so it is clean. It is very clear without surface or bottom, so it is clear. It relieves the touch of heat and suffering, so it is cool. It is without cloudiness like dirt, so it is unclouded. When drunk, it is delicious and enters the throat without effort, so it is comfortable. When it enters the stomach, it does not cause bloating or other diseases, nor does it conflict with previous food, but always brings comfort, so it does not harm the stomach. These eight are the eight qualities of human water. The eight qualities of divine water are as stated in the same text: "Clear, cool, and light, delicious, soft, warm, bright, and comfortable. These are the immaculate waters of the gods, considered to have eight desirable qualities." As such, it is clear without surface or bottom and without cloudiness, so it is clear. It relieves the suffering of heat, so it is cool. It is eight times lighter than human water, and the taste is sweet like honey, so it is delicious. It is soft to the touch, and when it is cold, it transforms into a warm appearance, and the colors of blue, yellow, red, and white are clear, like colors transformed by paint, each clear in its own way, and when it enters the stomach, it brings supreme comfort. It is difficult for those without miraculous powers to travel to that place. The lotus stalks in the lake are as thick as plow handles, and the petals are as wide as cowhides, covered with blooming flowers, where various water birds play and sing with extremely melodious voices. On the slope of that snowy mountain, there is a golden rock mountain

In the place of the wealthy one, there are caves of five hundred Arhats, surrounded by five hundred female attendants. There resides the elephant king of the lord of gods, exceedingly steadfast, along with five hundred elephant attendants, dwelling and enjoying in the form of gods. From the great Lake Manasarovar (མ་དྲོས་པ།), the waters flow from the four rivers emanating from the four directions: the Ganges (གངྒཱ།, Sanskrit: गंगा, gaṅgā, literal meaning: Ganges), the Indus (སིནྡྷུ།, Sanskrit: सिन्धु, sindhu, literal meaning: Indus), the Vakshu, and the Sita. These rivers, after circling Lake Manasarovar seven times to the right, flow naturally into the oceans of the four directions, accompanied by five hundred tributaries. On the shore of the lake, water flows from the mouths of variously shaped rocks. In the east, the Ganges (གངྒཱ།, Sanskrit: गंगा, gaṅgā, literal meaning: Ganges) flows from the mouth of an elephant, circling Manasarovar seven times and then flowing into the eastern ocean with five hundred tributaries. In the south, the Indus (སིནྡྷུ།, Sanskrit: सिन्धु, sindhu, literal meaning: Indus) flows from the mouth of a bull, similarly flowing into the southern ocean. In the west, the Vakshu flows from the mouth of a horse, flowing into the western ocean as before. In the north, the Sita flows from the mouth of a lion, flowing into the northern ocean as before. In some texts, it is said that in the east, the great river Lohita flows from the mouth of a horse, carrying silver sand, circling Lake Manasarovar seven times and flowing into the eastern ocean. In the south, the Ganges (གངྒཱ།, Sanskrit: गंगा, gaṅgā, literal meaning: Ganges) flows from the mouth of an elephant, carrying golden sand, flowing as before. In the west, the Indus (སིནྡྷུ།, Sanskrit: सिन्धु, sindhu, literal meaning: Indus) flows from the mouth of a peacock, carrying sand of various jewels, flowing as before. In the north, the Vakshu flows from the mouth of a lion, carrying diamond sand, flowing as before. Both of these accounts are from scripture, so there is no contradiction in any case. The meaning of flowing in a circular direction is that after flowing a long distance from Lake Manasarovar in four directions, there is a bend to the right of the lake. Like this, until reaching the respective oceans of the east and so on, seven bends occur, which is described in poetry. The surrounding of five hundred tributaries refers to the rivers of five hundred large, different places flowing into it, mixing and flowing. Even though the water volume increases due to the tributaries flowing in, it is not obvious. Although the essence of the ocean is one, because Jambudvipa has four different directions, the oceans are named eastern, southern, western, and northern oceans in relation to the direction of the water flow. On the shore of Lake Manasarovar is a Jambu tree.
