Because they grow in warm places, die when their bark is peeled, and follow the seasons, they are like humans. Trees have eyes because grapes and the like grow by relying on other trees, and medicinal trees face the sun. They have ears because when thick clouds make sounds, trees near water begin to drop their fruit to the ground. They have noses because if a rotting dog carcass is placed at the root of a madhulunga tree, the smell will cause the fruit to increase. They have tongues because if milk is poured on amla and the like, sweet fruit will result. They also have the sense of touch, because mimosa and moss contract when touched by hand, like centipedes. They have minds because if an ashoka tree does not produce flowers and fruit, flowers and fruit will appear if a young woman, intoxicated with desire and coquetry, has anklets placed on her feet, is smeared with turmeric juice, and steps on it. And if a bakula tree does not produce flowers, flowers will bloom and laugh if the mouth of a young woman is filled with sugarcane wine and sprayed. Those with one sense are earth, water, fire, and wind, which can be established because the sense of touch causes pain when pressed, heat when burned, and falling into a chasm when dropped. Those with two senses are worms, conches, sea cucumbers, and the like, because they have tongues and can sense whether a taste is delicious or not. Those with three senses are fireflies and ants, and the like, because they have touch, tongue, and nose, and can sense. Those with four senses are bumblebees and long-tongued bees, and the like, which have all four senses except for eyes, and can also hear sounds. Those with five senses are humans and quadrupeds such as horses, and birds and wild animals, and the like, which have both eyes and all five senses, and can also see forms, so it is thought. Therefore, earth, water, fire, and wind have only one sense, because they have nothing other than touch. Trees have all the senses, like humans. Other living beings have two, three, four, five, and so on, as appropriate, so it is thought. Non-living things are those without mind, namely sound, smell, taste, light, sky, shadow, rainbow, image, and so on. In general, it is knowable.

All things, in terms of the multiplicity of place, time, and number, are said to be of one nature. That is to say, this world and others are the multiplicity of places. The past and present eras are the multiplicity of times. Humans, birds, and wild animals, and so on, are the multiplicity of numbers. Although all these appear as many, they are of one nature. Just as a dzi bead has many colors such as black and white, but does not go beyond the scope of a dzi bead, like the feathers of a pigeon. Similarly, all ways of grasping with the mind and becoming valid cognitions are of one nature in terms of the multiplicity of place, time, and number. As it says in the Vyakarana: Place, time, and number are many, but in terms of nature, they are one. For example, from variegated colors, one grasps colors as desired. Similarly, because things are also diverse, the way of grasping things is both different and non-different. For the essence of many things, when one wants to express it, one considers it as the essence. Apart from the two ways of simultaneous and sequential, there is no other verbal activity. So it is said. The refutation of this is divided into two: refuting the divisions of knowable things and refuting the way of existence of universals. The first, as previously stated, has seven aspects. The refutation of asceticism is divided into three: difficulty and ease are relative, whether or not it is possible to be one with a person, and that it does not lead to liberation. The first is: In general, there is no such thing as asceticism, because difficulty and ease are relative, so it is not established by its own nature. For example, fasting is easy relative to beheading, so there is no single thing established as asceticism. Asceticism and the ascetic cannot be one, because there is no agent and object. Different aspects are prohibited. Nor can they be different, because it is of no benefit to oneself, just as someone else doing asceticism. It does not lead to liberation because, in particular, liberation is not attained by relying on the five fires, etc., because the relationship is not established and the essence is not established, and because sins are not purified if the four powers are not complete, and even if karma is exhausted, because afflictions have not been abandoned, it will be accumulated again. If there are afflictions, there is karma accumulated by them, even if karma is exhausted once, it cannot be prevented because it is accumulated again. Just as if one has not abandoned the bad habit of alcohol, even if the vow of breaking the cheek is purified once, one will still feel the vow when drinking alcohol again, or if one has not abandoned lust, even if one wipes it once, it will rise again.
