Because it does not exist inherently, and the east itself changes from here to the west, it cannot be fixed as one. Directions are not established, such as the southeast. Are the east and south connected or not connected? If connected, there is no meaning of direction, so direction is not established. If not connected, is there a gap between the edges of the direction and the southeast, or is there no gap? If there is a gap, then there will be another direction there. If there is no gap, it will become one. Good and bad directions are not established. It is not permissible for a bad direction in the east to not exist in the west, because the Saha world is the west of Sukhavati, and also the east of Sukhavati. Relying on one's own position, the east there being a bad direction is also not established, because of the reasoning of particles and time, both oneself and the east are not established. Furthermore, is that bad direction bad for all people, or bad for one person? If the former, because it is the east of Sukhavati, it is good, and here too it will become good. If the latter, then even after many years, there will be no change for the worse. Understanding in this way, there is no bad direction, because it is known to be without a basis. In the Prajnaparamita Sutra, it is said: "The realm of the east is empty, the realm of the east is empty by the realm of the east," and so on. The permanent direction is not established, because when things are destroyed or change position, their east, etc., also seem to change from the original state. For purely non-things, because there is no autonomous part, there is no basis for establishing a direction. Space is not established. When nothing is established, it is merely labeled as space. Even in conventional terms, there is no space, because the gray in between is appearance, and the black is darkness, so it is not established for anyone or for anything. Therefore, it is only the illusion that is called space. In the Ratnavali, it is said: "Because the substance of form does not exist, space is also just a name." The idea that one sees space is said to be foolish, because in the Four Hundred Verses it is said: "Ordinary people think that space is permanent, but the wise do not see the truth even in the world." Also, in the Samgraha Sutra, it is said: "Beings say that they see space, but one should examine how space is seen. The Tathagata also taught that seeing the Dharma is the same. The example of seeing cannot be described by anything else." Also, in the Prajnaparamita Sutra,

Sa. In the realm of space, there is no specific direction for the east. South, west, north, above, below, and the intermediate directions have no specific designation. Space is not round, not square, not blue, not yellow, not past, not future, and not what is happening now. In space, there is no birth, cessation, abiding, or change. Space is neither to be known nor to be attained. Space is neither with form nor without form. Space is neither permanent nor impermanent. Space is neither light nor darkness. To say that space opens up opportunities for limitless sentient beings is because there are no sentient beings; one should realize that space does not exist. Because space does not exist, one should realize that the Great Vehicle does not exist. Therefore, the Great Vehicle is merely a construct of the mind, and it does not exist in reality, as stated by the Buddha. If one thinks that quoting Buddhist scriptures as proof is not important when arguing with non-Buddhists, that is not the case. Because after refuting with reason, quoting scriptures is necessary to respectfully acknowledge that the words of the omniscient Buddha are reliable. There are two points in refuting impermanence: the thing with parts is not established, and impermanence is not established. The first point is that when arguing that an island is a thing with parts, something like a snow mountain is not established as a part because it does not exist like dust particles. Impermanence is also not established because, upon analysis, single and multiple parts and things with parts cannot be established. If one says that dust particles are permanent and coarse things are impermanent, that is also not established because it is impossible for one thing to have both permanent and impermanent qualities at the same time. Refuting qualities includes: number, volume, contact, distinction, other, non-other, and refuting the qualities of space, which are seven aspects. The first aspect includes: dependence, substance, and the agent not being established, which are three points. Dependence refers to the fact that setting one and nine as more and less is mutually dependent. Since the basis of dependence and the nature of dependence are not established, number cannot be established. Substance not being established refers to the fact that numbers themselves, like one and one hundred, are each independent, so they cannot be counted as a whole. If these independent numbers are analyzed, they also cannot be established, so substance is not established. The agent not being established refers to where the agent of one khal (a unit of measurement) comes from. If one phul (a unit of capacity) and one grain of barley are divided into smaller parts and analyzed, they will disappear.
