I also would be constantly not enjoying, because not enjoying is constant. Shantideva said: If the consciousness of sound were constant, then at all times there would be apprehension of sound. If there is no object of knowledge, then from what is it known? By what is it said to be a knower? If unknowing were knowing, then trees also would become knowers. As it is said. If it is said that when sound exists, it is enjoyed, and when it does not exist, it is not enjoyed, then I would become impermanent, because I follow sound, sometimes enjoying and sometimes not enjoying. Refuting the hiddenness of pleasure and pain: If pleasure and pain were hidden, like the pleasure and pain of another person's continuum, it would be unreasonable for oneself to directly experience them, and if that were the case, even if there were benefit or harm, it would not change. But here, pleasure and so on are clearly experienced, and since it is not different from the mind, it is established through the clearest experience. In the Pramāṇavārttika, it says: Without experiencing suffering and so on, it is not the cause of suffering and benefit. And, that which is of the nature of that and not that, is produced by the real cause of that and not that. Consciousness is not born from another cause, why is pleasure and so on not known by it? Refuting the hiddenness of the mind: If one's own mind were hidden from oneself, then just as when examining the mind of another person, one's own mind would also not be clearly known, and it would become that there is no proof of the existence of mind, and it would also become that meaning cannot be established, and all terms would be interrupted, therefore it is extremely unreasonable. In the Pramāṇavārttika, it says: The mind of one's own mind and the mind of another, are completely cut off, and their nature becomes one. Separated from past meanings and examples, and the sign is not existent. And, therefore, meaning is established from the mind, but how can it be established from meaning? Without establishing it, meaning itself cannot be established. And, to those who say that the mind is not manifest to those directions that are not self-knowing, this has answered by this not seeing all meanings. As it is said. Refuting the eon of destruction: When a pot is broken, are the essence of the pot, its clarity, and the eon of destruction three things that are one or different? If they are different, then clarity itself should not be the eon of destruction, because it is not the essence of the eon of destruction. If they are one, then the essence of the pot should also become destroyed, because it is one with the clarity of destruction, just like clarity. Even if clarity is destroyed, the essence does not

If it is cut off, it becomes clear and the entities become different, because it is a contradictory dharma, like hot and cold touch. Knowing alone does not liberate, merely knowing the twenty-five principles is not a method of liberation, because it is not the suchness of the knowable, like appearance. The person who knows the twenty-five principles is also not liberated by merely knowing them, because he does not know the suchness of the knowable, like knowing appearance. In this way, the assertion that one's own mind is the Buddha is also refuted. Here, no matter how confused the appearances may be, in reality there is no purity or impurity, therefore it is determined to be pure equality and free from elaboration. Now, the tenets of the Vaiśeṣika school are stated: The Vaiśeṣikas claim that liberation is attained through the six meanings of the knowable, but this is not correct. The non-Buddhist Vaiśeṣikas determine all knowables as six meanings of words, and believe that liberation is attained thereby, but this is not the correct meaning, because they have entered the path of perversion. Here, understanding is to be done through establishing their tenets and refuting them. First, those non-Buddhists who claim to attain accomplishment by eating grains of rice and propitiating Īśvara, regard Kaṇāda as the teacher, and Īśvara as the god, and follow the scriptures taught by him, such as the Śāntikarika, can be divided into: Īśvara-vādins, Ulūka-vādins, Ulūka-putra-vādins, Vaiśeṣikas, and Jñāna-vādins. Among these, because they regard Īśvara as the god, they are the Īśvara-vādins. Because they regard Ulūka as the god, they are called Ulūka-putras or Ulūka-vādins. When an owl landed on the stone lingam where Kaṇāda had propitiated Īśvara, they regarded it as Īśvara, and when asked if there was substance, it flew to the six directions, including the direction of the head, hence the name. Because they accept distinctions, they are the Vaiśeṣikas. Because they accept knowledge, they are the Jñāna-vādins. Here, according to their tenets, the agent is Īśvara, offering to him attains good rebirths, the knowable is determined as six meanings of words, and knowing these attains liberation. Among these four points, the first is further divided into three: the nature, qualities, and proof of Īśvara. Among these, the nature is fivefold: it is eternal, it is one, it acts with movement that precedes intelligence, it is included in the realm of the gods, it is pure and worthy of offering. Eternal means existing from beginning to end.
