Sixteen. Eight who say there is nothing. Eight who say that both existence and non-existence are not. Seven who say there is annihilation. Five who say that this is nirvana. First, the self with the perception of form, and the self without the perception of form, and the self with the perception of both, and the self with the perception of neither, these are four. The self with boundaries, and the self without boundaries, both, and four with the perception of neither. The self with happiness, and suffering, and both, and neither, these are four. The self is one, and different, and small, and large, these are four, totaling sixteen. These can also be summarized into four types of perception: form, boundaries, happiness and suffering, and oneness and difference. Among the last four, the one is all-pervasive, the different is that each person has their own self, the small one desires the desire realm, and the large one desires the form realm. Eight who say there is no perception: the self with form and no perception, like hair and nails; the self without form and no perception, like space; both without perception, and neither without perception, these four situations; the self with boundaries and no perception, and so on, these four situations. Eight who say that neither perception nor non-perception exist: the self with form, neither with perception nor without perception; likewise, neither without perception, neither both, nor neither of the four situations; the four situations of having or not having boundaries, neither with perception nor without perception, these four, totaling eight. Seven who say there is annihilation: humans and gods of the desire realm, gods of the form realm, Infinite space, consciousness, nothingness, and the gods of the peak of existence, all have suffering until they die, and they think it is happiness to be annihilated after death, thinking that there is no karmic result of past and future lives. Those who say that this is nirvana: if the gods and humans of the desire realm indulge in sensual pleasures in this life, they will attain nirvana in this life, and by diligently meditating on their respective samadhis of the first, second, third, and fourth dhyanas, they say that they will attain nirvana in that life. They also think that there are no past and future lives. In refuting these, those who say there is permanence: it is refuted by refuting the permanent substance, and it is also said in the sutra: all dharmas are said to be permanent, so like a wheel of fire.

They will be born in a hell filled with excrement. Even if they are liberated from that, they will be reborn as corpse-eating pretas for three hundred lifetimes. Even if they are born as humans, they will be born as slaves. Some schools that assert permanence are refuted by the refutation of permanent entities. The sutra says: Some people assert permanence, therefore they will be born in a hell as dark as a forest fire. Even if they are liberated from that, they will be reborn as pretas who eat vomit for a hundred lifetimes, and then be reborn as livestock that eat leftovers. Asserting that things are infinite is contrary to secrecy, so it will not be elaborated here. Regarding the refutation of asserting that things are both finite and infinite, there are three refutations. The whole cannot be established, just as the edge of a cloth is covered by the cloth. Only the edge and center are covered by a whole. The general refutation is that a whole cannot be established. The atom of the edge cannot be established, because the edge itself cannot exist anywhere, because all things are covered by parts, and everything with parts is covered by something else outside. It is impossible to refute that things are infinite, because the assertion that the world has boundaries is very unreasonable, because the sky covers everything, and the world is also covered, and there is no obstruction. Denying gods and humans also refutes the existence of coarse, indivisible atoms, and refutes the existence of subtle, indivisible moments, therefore denying the existence of gods and humans. Without a cause means that for the sprout that exists now, the conditions that make it complete, such as warmth and moisture, are obvious material things, and it has been proven by valid cognition that there was consciousness before the consciousness that exists now. Therefore, without a cause is refuted. Regarding the boundary of future lives, the general perception is that it cannot be permanent, because it clings to certain objects. There is no form, because indivisible atoms cannot be established. It is impossible to be always happy, because it is only occasional. It is the same with being always miserable. It is impossible to be one, because pervasive substances are different. It is impossible to have no difference, because time and sequence are not allowed. It is impossible to have size, because there are no parts. It is impossible to have consciousness without form, because it is impossible to enjoy both appearance and awareness. Neither both nor the three skandhas, if two contradictory things cannot gather, then the basis cannot exist, therefore it is refuted. There are two refutations of nihilism and eternalism: there is no permanence, there is no continuity, and the imputed existence is not refuted. The first is that if there is a permanent thing, then it will be cut
