Before the pure stupa, he relinquished desires for horses, ornaments, and food, vowing never to return. Until I attain the supreme state of immortality, until I attain the sacred, deathless enlightenment, I shall face the Deer Park, and I shall not walk, stay, sit, or lie down. Having spoken thus, he shaved his own head and received monastic robes from the son of the pure abode gods, making them into Dharma garments, and completed the ordination of a fully ordained monk. Then, to demonstrate that the gods and practices of the outsiders are not the way, he listened to the teachings of those known in the world as having great instructions, such as Long Hair, the son of the illusionist, and Delightful Conduct, the son of Satisfaction, who taught nothingness, and the instructions teaching the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. His friends refuted him, saying, 'Your Dharma is not a path to liberation.' Then, associating with the five ascetics who had completely abandoned them, he reached the peak of knowledge. The eighth great deed is practicing austerities. To refute those who hold ethical discipline and asceticism as supreme and seek purification through suffering, he fasted from food and drink on the banks of the Nairanjana River, entering into sky-like samadhi for six years through the practice of asceticism. Then, the Buddhas of the three times urged him, saying, 'Do you not understand the suchness of all dharmas? Can one become a Buddha merely through practicing austerities?' Then, keeping his body in that state, his mind entered the form of the enjoyment body, and he taught the tantras of the four parts of yoga on the summit of Mount Meru. Afterwards, emerging from the midst of austerities, his body emaciated, a cowherd girl offered him soft yogurt, and his body regained its radiance. The daughter of a merchant poured the milk produced in one hundred auspicious days into a single container and offered him fresh rice and milk porridge cooked together. Then, the Bodhisattva bathed in the Nairanjana River to cool his body. Then, the king of the bees offered honey. Having consumed it, his body became like polished gold. The ninth great deed is subduing the maras. He said to the grass seller, Auspicious One: Auspicious One, quickly give me grass. Today, through this grass, I will accomplish a great purpose. Having destroyed the maras and their armies, I shall attain enlightenment and peace. Having spoken thus, he took kusha grass.

He took a handful of grass, blue and smooth like a peacock's neck, with green leaves spiraling to the right, and spread it under the Bodhi tree in an unblemished spot. Sitting in the lotus position, he spoke thus: 'On this seat, may my body wither, may the assembly of skin, flesh, and bones disintegrate, but until I attain the Bodhi that is difficult to find in many eons, I shall not move from this seat.' Having made this vow, Bodhisattvas from the ten directions gathered, made offerings, and circumambulated. Furthermore, a ray of light called 'Subduing the Maras' emanated from between his eyebrows, pervading all the Maras of the three thousand worlds, and from the light came forth a verse: 'Beings purified, practicing for many eons, the son of Śuddhodana, abandoning his kingdom, desiring the nectar of benefit, has manifested himself, today he must strive under the Bodhi tree.' At the same time, the wicked Maras experienced seventy-two inauspicious omens, including their own territories being enveloped in darkness. Sixty kinds of Mara armies gathered, the forms of Yaksha Kumbhanda and scatophagous ghosts, the forms of Rakshasas and flesh-eating hungry ghosts, countless ugly and repulsive forms of the world, all of these were manifested there through illusion. And, from all directions, mountain ranges were conjured, and a rain of fierce weapons fell from the sky. They also manifested burning wrath, and said: 'We must reduce this son of Shakya to ashes!' Although they displayed extremely hideous appearances and uttered various roars, they had no fear of the Bodhisattva. Even when they fiercely hurled weapons and the like, the body of the compassionate Sage was unharmed by fire, poison, or weapons. The hurled weapons turned into flowers. They said: 'Thus he meditates for Bodhi.' In this way, they failed to cause harm. Out of a thousand sons of Mara, the wise and virtuous and the wicked and so on, initially split into two factions. Because of the division, they could not overcome the Bodhisattva. The Mara then said: 'I have never made offerings or donations before, you are my witness. But you have no witness here, and even the sound has no witness.'
