For those who attain enlightenment instantaneously, it is through the sequence of stages, liberated from the very beginning, without the need for re-establishment, and so on." "The second is the path of Tögal (超越道, Leaping Over), where those who attain enlightenment gradually do so by aligning the key points of the channels and winds. This is done by progressing through the three preliminaries and settling into a natural state, up to the point of directly realizing the essential nature. By aligning the key points of the body, the gateways, the places, and the wind-mind, and engaging in practice, the four visions reach their culmination, leading to liberation. As stated in the same text: 'These realizations are, in fact, the distinction of method. How can the stages be explained, given the differences in beings' minds? Self-liberation occurs effortlessly, while diligent effort must be practiced. Those without effort are naturally pure. The key points are the three purities. Their meaning should be practiced: body, gateways, and places. The key points of the body are these three: the posture of a lion, the posture of an elephant, and knowing it as like a sage. The gateway is that which does not move, and when the two clarifiers do not move, even the sky does not move. The key points of the place are also three: abiding in the pure expanse, likewise abiding in the essence of awareness, and abiding in all appearances. The mind abides unchangeably in its own place. The heart abides unchangeably in wakefulness. Awareness, unchanging, clarifies the three kayas. When mind and heart are relaxed, the stream of thoughts ceases. When body and speech are relaxed, suffering is abandoned. When awareness is relaxed, the five kayas arise. When awareness arises, the causes and conditions cease. When the expanse of awareness arises, the objects and mind cease. Thus, the symbolic tantra of method is not generated and perfected in one's own continuum. That which symbolizes is the method, and that which continuously abides is called the tantra.' So it is said. The second, the tantra of self-nature, is the meaning of the ground, path, and fruition. As stated in the same text: 'The ground, path, and fruition, are definitely grasped as the tantra of self-nature.' So it is said." "Here, the essence is that the essence of emptiness, clarity, and awareness is encompassed by the ground, path, and fruition. The definition is that it pervades all and is the nature of attaining Buddhahood, therefore it is called the tantra of self-nature. The divisions are the ground, the heart essence, and the essence of the self-nature tantra, which are three. The ground self-nature tantra is the primordial, originally pure awareness, the three: essence, nature, and compassion. Its essence is pure from the beginning, so there is no name for ignorance.
