May all beings be free from sorrow. The excellent quality that accomplishes joy, happiness, and well-being. This vehicle is like the sky, an immeasurable great mansion. Thus it is. In terms of divisions, there are two: Lesser Vehicle and Great Vehicle, or the three vehicles of Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas, or immeasurable depending on the minds of those to be trained. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: As long as the mind is engaged, there is no end to the vehicles. Thus it is. The purpose is to accomplish the two benefits of temporary and ultimate meaning. The result is to be liberated from the three realms and attain liberation. Third, explaining the distinctions in detail: From Rigpa Rangshar: The divisions of the vehicles are as follows: Sutra, Extensive, Great, and Very Extensive. The Very Extensive is eighty-four thousand, inconceivable. Vast, numerous, and great, inconceivable and immeasurable. Inexpressible, beyond thought, great. The Extensive is as follows: It is considered to be nine types of divisions. Hearers and Solitary Realizers, as well as Bodhisattvas. Kriya and Upa, as well as the Yoga Vehicle. Maha Anu Yoga, as well as Ati Dzogchen. Thus, nine types are explained, which is the great teaching of the Dharma. To determine the meaning of what was said: In general, although the categories of the Buddha's teachings are limitless, if they are condensed into vehicles, the vehicles can be briefly summarized as two: the Lesser and Great Vehicles, or the Causal Vehicle and the Resultant Vajra Vehicle. If explained extensively, for the three types of beings with lesser faculties, there are the three vehicles of Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas; for the three types of beings with medium faculties, there are the three of Kriya, Upa, and Yoga; for the three types of beings with sharp faculties, there are the three of Maha, Anu, and Ati. From the Great Adornment of Ati: The teachings that I have taught are based on the order of beings' minds. With the difference of great and small, I have taught in the manner of two orders. Each has its own view and its own abiding. Each itself is two orders, inverted and correct views. Abiding in samsara with inverted thoughts. The correct one has three orders: for those with small minds and great, as well as those with medium minds, I have taught in the manner of three orders. The order of the small has three types. The Dharma that corresponds to their minds, defiled by thoughts, is the Hearer. Considering

For those with faith, it is self-arisen wisdom; for those with conceptualization, it is Bodhicitta. For the three middling individuals, the teachings are proclaimed; for the extremely inferior, it is action; for the inferior, it is practice. For those with consciousness, it is Yoga itself. For the three great individuals with sequential stages, for those with vast minds, it is the generation stage; for those with essential minds, it is the completion stage. The most supreme secret and excellent is the Great Perfection. Thus it is said. The vast Great Vehicle is such that all the Buddha's words are contained within the three Pitakas. Mantras are the great Abhidharma. The Sutra Pitaka, Vinaya Pitaka, and Abhidharma Pitaka, when these three are equal, there are twenty-one thousand one hundred. The aggregates of Dharma are eighty-four thousand. If one were to further divide these, then in relation to each antidote for subduing the conceptual aggregates of sentient beings, it would be even more vast, numerous, inconceivable, and beyond expression. Here, the vehicles are classified into nine. First, concerning the explanation of the Hearer Vehicle, there are five aspects. Its essence is: the intention to liberate oneself alone from Samsara, which becomes the means to realize the selflessness of the individual. The etymology is: having listened to the Dharma from the teacher, then proclaiming it to others, and because one relies on the teacher to accomplish enlightenment in the final existence, it is called Hearer. The purpose is: to definitely liberate from Samsara. The result is: attaining the Arhatship with remainder and without remainder. The divisions are: the Sutra School and the Vaibhashika School. The Vaibhashika School is: the coarse conventional truth, like a yak tail and tender grass, appears as a single aggregate, but in ultimate truth, it is considered to be particulate atoms with parts. The continuum of consciousness is conventional, and the moment is ultimate, without parts, like water in a vase. From the perspective of aggregates, elements, and sources, the coarse appearance is considered to be atoms surrounded with intervals. Although they accept the selflessness of the individual, they assert that the self of phenomena, atoms, and moments exist. Furthermore, by knowing the cause and effect, acceptance and rejection, in the Dharma contained within the Four Truths. The cause: the origin. The cessation. Focusing on the four aspects of dependent origination. The aspects of consciousness are to know suffering as something to be known, the origin as something to be abandoned, the path as something to be cultivated, and the cessation as something to be attained. And by knowing through the aspects of suffering as something to be abandoned, emptiness, and selflessness. The path: in the manner of reason, accomplishment, and determination. The cessation: contemplating in the manner of peace, excellence, and selflessness.
