When gathered, the fine hairs of a horse's tail either enter the water or remain on the bank; ants and worms transform into bees; leeches turn into frogs, which is how we know. Therefore, causes are not permanent. In summer, twigs, pebbles, and ears of grain that enter ant nests become sentient beings. When causes and conditions gather, the result becomes a sentient being. Moreover, good causes and conditions produce good results, just as a beautiful princess is born from a beautiful queen. This is what they believe. Those who assert the annihilation of results, such as Kata's son Nokchen and Mipam Hair-Cloak, not only believe that present beings have no past lives, but also that the habitual tendencies of the mind arising from the elements cannot produce (future lives), but arise naturally. For example, no one uses tools to sharpen thorns, yet they naturally become sharp and long; the sun rises and sets, water flows downwards, and so on. These have no cause, but they naturally form in this way from the beginning. After death, they disappear without a trace, so there is absolutely no result in future lives. This is what they believe. The Black Lord Tantra says: The sun rises, rivers flow downwards, round beans, thorns are long and sharp, the peacock's plumage is bright and beautiful, and the king's daughters are beautiful to behold. None of these were made by anyone, but arise naturally. Destruction is also non-existent, and there is no future life. All of this is merely a mistaken appearance of conceptual thought. If that is the case, then the arrangement of the scriptures becomes meaningless. If challenged in this way, their answer is: According to those who assert the annihilation of causes, even if there is no mind from a previous life, there is a mind arising from the separate (elements) in the present. Therefore, when it ripens into a sentient being, if one is accustomed to the nature of non-existence, then after death, the habitual tendencies of the four elements will not enter the mind and will be liberated, so the scriptures have meaning. If one is not accustomed to the nature of non-existence, then at the time of death, when the four elements of the body—earth, water, fire, and wind—dissolve into the external elements, this awareness will also be divided into four parts and again be lost in the nature of affliction. Those who assert the annihilation of results say: The nature of non-existence
