Gyaddo. The alaya-consciousness, which does not discriminate towards objects, is the pure, non-discriminating consciousness that is the cause of the arising of appearances. From it arise the five sense consciousnesses: the eye consciousness apprehends form without discrimination, the ear consciousness apprehends sound without discrimination, the nose consciousness apprehends smell without discrimination, the tongue consciousness apprehends taste without discrimination, and the body consciousness apprehends touch without discrimination. From these arise the two mind consciousnesses of grasper and grasped: the mind consciousness that first apprehends the general object, and then the afflicted mind that apprehends the particulars, namely, the grasped and the grasper. These two mind consciousnesses have three aspects: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral, and they can be either conceptual or non-conceptual, as appropriate. The five sense consciousnesses and the alaya-consciousness are non-conceptual. Thus, all fifty-one minds and mental factors of the three realms are merely objects to be abandoned and imputed, as it is said in the Two Truths: "Minds and mental factors in the three realms, are conceptual, with imputed aspects." These are to be abandoned because they are the nature of ignorance. Here, taking the mind as the path, even the great treatises of Madhyamaka and other schools that desire Buddhahood, divide mind and mind-nature into two, and gather the nature of the eight, seven, or six consciousnesses into what is to be abandoned, and realize that mind-nature, which is naturally pure, is to be taken up, and thus engage in the path of meditation. Here, too, it is somewhat similar, and it is said that there is awareness and mind-nature arising from awareness, and the mind that grasps its own characteristics. As it is said in the Sixth Space: "O Great Mind Hero, awareness and mind-nature arising from awareness are beyond all defilements and discriminations. In short, they are all the causes and effects of Nirvana, the sphere of activity of those who see the self-appearance of awareness. The mind that grasps its own characteristics is all that appears to be imputed in this way, and all that appears to exist, and all that appears to not exist, and all that appears as appearance, fame, seeing, meditation, and action, and all grasping, conceptualization, and afflictions, which are all that appear as objects of thought. In short, all the phenomena of samsara are the mind that grasps its own characteristics, which are all the appearances of the respective karmas of the six classes of beings." Thus it was said.

So, do you think these two are the same? There is a big difference. Whatever view, meditation, or action is done by the common vehicle, it cannot transcend the mind. But here, not mixed with the mind, the key point of manifest awareness is the most excellent, and so on, there are many. Fourth, regarding the individual meanings, the support, place, path, gate, essence, ability, function, and result of the mind, among these eight: The support is the upper part of the body of the form aggregate. The place is in the vessel like a thin grass tube between the heart and the lungs, where the sound of awareness dwells riding on the horse of wind. The wind is like a blind and lame horse, and the sound of awareness is like a one-eyed cripple. If these two are not mixed together, thoughts of various changes will not arise. The sound of awareness naturally dwells in itself, and even external appearances are not conceptualized, resulting in clear and lucid knowing. This is the key point of wind, the reason for distinguishing wind and awareness. When these two are mixed, thoughts of various changes arise, the moving aspect is wind, and the knowing aspect is the sound of awareness. Moreover, the awareness within the heart is like water, and from there, the ability of sound goes into the vessel tube, and the mind mixed with wind is like a water bubble, that mind is the ability or sound of awareness. Furthermore, the mind changes according to the presence or absence of awareness, but awareness does not change according to the presence or absence of the mind. Therefore, in terms of essence, awareness is not controlled by the mind; because it is ability, the mind is controlled by awareness. If awareness does not waver, thoughts of the mind will not arise, just as waves cannot arise if water does not waver. In the Self-Arisen it says: The analogy of mind and awareness is like water and a bubble, awareness is not controlled by the mind. The path flows from the life-force channel, because from there, the life-wind, the horse of the mind, flows. The gate is the mouth and nose, because the wind comes out from there. The essence is the nature of samsara, grasping and being grasped. The ability is to cling to objects and to self. The function is to create various joys and sorrows of samsara. The result is the endlessness of samsara and the lower realms. As it is also said in the Self-Arisen: The impure state exists in the self-continuum of all sentient beings, the impure triple layer exists. That state is like this:
